Favorite Math assignment

Hi everyone and welcome back to the blog. After posting my favorite assignments from quarter 1 and quarter 2 of my grade 9 year, I have decided to post my favorite assignment from one of my quarter 3 classes. For this post, the assignment I  have chosen is a math project I did about midway through the quarter. For this project I was told to create a fictional story that incorporates 4 of the exponent laws. Since my math class wasn’t very far into the quarter I knew this project would have a big effect on my grade. So, when I got started I decided to use PowerPoint for my story. The storyline would be two guys having to get through an escape room using exponent laws. When I started working on the project I knew it would be pretty tough, so I devoted some extra time to work on the project. Going through the project I developed some good ideas for the storyline, during the project I created a good long paragraph for every chapter, as a result it took me a long time. After a few days of some hard work I proof read the project and turned it in on time. After I turned it in I thought I had done a really good job, as I worked really hard and stated four exponent laws. When my mark came back a few days later I was really proud of myself as I got 44.5 out of 50, which is 89%. I knew this would boost my grade in math up a lot and all the hard work and extra time I used for this project paid off. The great thing about this project is that I knew I had done really well on a challenging project. Like I said this project had a big effect on my grade and it meant a lot to do well on it.

Did Tokyo set of fireworks in June?

When I was researching Olympics stuff I came across an interesting article. This article was released from BBC in June of 2020, and claimed that the city of Tokyo Japan set off some fireworks to basically cheer up people in Japan. The article said this was mostly done because the Tokyo 2020 Olympics had been cancelled and a lot of Japan was sad, because they were looking forward to the Olympics. Apparently people were watching the fireworks all over the country. Also, the article claimed another reason they did the Fireworks was because a lot off the fireworks makers were struggling with their business due to the pandemic. After reading this article a few times I thought some stuff seemed unreliable, so I went through some fact checking methods to see if this story was real.

  1. I looked at the article and I found there was no author to the article. There was also no key words I found in the article, like source. The article was from BBC which is a trustworthy network, but the article also said the firework displays were from ‘secret’ locations, which I thought was a bit suspicious.

2. Next, I went to a google search and searched Tokyo sets off Olympics fireworks hoax. This gave me many articles, most saying that the fireworks display was fake. There was a lot of trustworthy articles that all said the same thing so I almost knew that the fireworks display was not real.

3. After I did the google search I went to what I know is a trustworthy fact checking source snopes.com. Snopes.com clearly said that the fireworks was false and it was created using a simulation.

After doing my research I did find out that Japan setting off fireworks was false. All I had to do to find this out was read through the article, do a google search and involve the word hoax and visit snopes.com. Snopes.com was a quick and reliable fact checking source and I would recommend it for fact checking.

My Favourite Socials Assignment

Welcome back to my blog, today I will be doing a post similar to my woodworking 9 post. I will be talking about my favorite assignment in socials 9. As you know there is a quarter system instead of a semester system for my grade 9 year. So, for my socials 9 it was much shorter than it used to be. Not too long into socials 9 our class was given an assignment. This assignment was to write a letter to John A. Macdonald as Louis Riel demanding better living situations for the Metis. This was a big assignment for socials 9 and would have a large effect on our grade so I knew I had to do good on it. With this project it took me a while to do, so on a Sunday morning I decided to start at noon and get as far as I could. It took me hours to do and I felt really proud of what I had done. I had to write an opening statement, five points on why John A. Macdonald should not kick the Metis off their land and a conclusion. As I said this assignment was given not long into Socials 9 which because we were in the quarter system I had not a lot of time to work on it. So, with very little class time I took a lot of my time at home and in the library at Charles Best to work hard on the project. When I finished it I proof read it and it looked really good. A few days later I got my marks back, it turns out all my hard work payed off, and I got 10/10. I got some good comments from my teacher and I knew I had done a good job.

The Olympic Games

For this new post I will be talking about the Olympic games. As you read in my about me post, you found out that I love the Olympic games, and enjoy watching them. So first I will start with some history on the Olympics, the modern Olympic games originated in 1896 in Athens Greece a lot of the sports were different at the time. the Olympics would go on every four years up until 1994. The Olympics in the early 1900s were in places such as Paris, Stockholm, St. Louis and other Places. Up until 1924 it was only summer Olympics, the events would include athletics, swimming, golf and other stuff. in 1924 Chamonix hosted the first ever winter Olympics. This would change the schedule of the Olympics a little bit, The Olympics would still happen every four years but in the winter season of an Olympic year a winter Olympics would happen, and in the summer season a Summer Olympics would happen. In 1956 controversy hit the Olympics, many teams such as Egypt, Lebanon and Iraq decided not to compete in the 1956 Olympics due to invasions, and Spain and the Netherlands decided not to compete in the same games because of the Soviet Union invasions. In the Olympics many sports would be added and some would be taken away such as in 1908 the now famous winter Olympic sport figure skating was added to the Olympics. Next came hockey, hockey debuted in the 1920 summer Olympics and would return in the 1924 winter Olympics. Another example would be curling, curling was added to the Olympics in 1998 and was instantly successful. Now that our history is done we move to 1976 in Montreal. The 1976 summer Olympics were the first Olympic games in Canada and they were pretty successful. One of the most famous things during the 1976 Olympics was that Montreal built an Olympic stadium for the Olympics. This Olympic stadium was used for the opening ceremony, closing ceremony and most of the athletics stuff. Though building the Olympic stadium came with consequences, with building the Olympic stadium cost a lot of money and the money needed to pay was a lot. This caused the city of Montreal to have a debt of 1.6 billion and wasn’t officially paid off until forty years later in 2006. But that wasn’t the only problem, When Montreal built the Olympic stadium it wasn’t totally finished when the Olympics came, the retractable roof could not be used for the Olympics because the height of the tower was not good enough. Now four years later history was made. In February of 1980 the winter Olympics hit Lake Placid New York. In these Olympics USA had a great time. They started by their speed skater Eric Heiden winning five gold medals. But history was really made when the USA upset the Soviet Union in men’s hockey. This happened when the soviet union hadn’t lost a tournament in twenty years, and the USA team was a bunch of college kids. The Soviet union started the Olympics men’s hockey by going 6 wins and 0 losses and 0 ties while the USA team went with 5 wins and 1 tie. coming into the semi finals the United States were going to face the Soviet Union and many people doubted that they were going to win. But it happened, the USA just narrowly beat the Soviet Union 4-3 on route to winning the gold medal two days later. This was one of the biggest upsets in sports history. Soon Olympic hockey would become more popular than the Stanley cup final. Soon Canada would become a powerhouse at hockey in the Olympics, with gold medals in 1920,1924,1928,1932,1952,2002,2010 and 2014.One of the most famous gold medals for Canada came at Vancouver 2010 when Sidney Crosby scored the “golden goal” in overtime to defeat the really good USA team. These are some of the reasons as to why I like the Olympics, the Olympics are so entertaining and it is so fun to watch your country try to compete for a gold medal.

Woodworking 9: Wood ID assigment

When I was in the second half of my first quarter in high school Woodworking 9 moved online. When we went online we had to do some reflections of wood videos on the internet. A couple weeks into online Woodworking we had to do a wood ID assignment. In this assignment I had to walk around my neighborhood and pick a tree and identify it using some websites. I picked a tree close to my house and identified it as the western redcedar. I really enjoyed this project because this was the first hard woodworking project and it counted a lot for marks. When I first saw the assignment I was a bit intimated because I don’t know too much about trees. When I finished the Assignment I went to look at my mark and I got 10/10, I was really proud of myself.

Some Guidelines On Commenting On My Blogs

Hi friends, firstly I want to thank you for reading my about me blog, it means a lot to me that you read my blog. The about me blog took a lot of time to make and I am looking forward to reading the comments. But before we start I must lay out some guidelines for your commenting.

No foul language

  • To write foul language on a comment is firstly disrespectful, I can afford some comments on improving my blog, but I don’t want to see any foul language. Also, some people can get offended on this kind of language and showing this can hurt your reputation.

No off-topic rants

  • Firstly, I like long comments on my blog, but if you are writing a comment you must stay on topic. For example, if you comment on something I should improve on in my blog, you don’t want to start talking about some other persons blog or something. Consider this when you are commenting on other blogs.

No derogatory or inflammatory comments

  • As I said it is perfectly okay to give me some corrections on my blog, but never use your comments to pick on anyone. This ties in with my point on not using foul language, you always be respectful with others on commenting, and using foul language to pick on others is disrespectful and should never happen on a blog.

No imbedded links to another website

  • When you are commenting, your reason to comment is that you can help support or improve the author. Your comments are not to show people your blogs (there are other ways to do that). This is also disrespectful to the author of the blog, the author wants to see comments to improve his or her writing not to see other blogs. This also ties in to how you must stay on topic, for example you shouldn’t compare people’s blogs to your blogs. This is disrespectful to the author and nobody wants to see it.

Example:

On my about me blog:

” Hi Adam, I just want to say that you are really good at describing the stuff you like. I had no idea you liked the Olympics so much, I had never heard the quote ” work hard in silence let success be your noise” before and that quote really inspires me now. keep it up Adam and I am looking forward to your next blog.
