For the past few months, the convoy of truckers has been shaking Canada. The union is self-titled participants a “peaceful protest for freedom,” but is that really the truth? When you put your alliance online with the trucker convoy, do you really support?
The convoy is a demonstration so American truckers could enter Canada without vaccinations (although without being a citizen of America one could not enter America without vaccinations). Several leaders of these campaigns have a history of racism and discriminatory values. One example, Patrick King, one of the people on the front lines of the movement, is known to share racist conspiracies and claims that COVID-19 is a « human-created biological weapon ». The public is asking if « peaceful protest » is a way for white supremacists to hide in plain sight.
A percentage of posts are traced to have a connection to alt-right extremists and even neo-Nazis. Additionally, protesters are seen with Confederate flags and swastikas. Those individuals who are on the front lines of the movement believe that immigrants (particularly of Islamic descent) want to « depopulate the white race. » These beliefs are harmful, ignorant and have no place in a peaceful country. It’s titled to be peaceful, but spread violent ideologies.
Maybe you’re against pandemic mandates, but it’s important that before you post this convoy, you know what you’re really supporting and telling the world when you post this. When you share their posts, you give them a stage to spread ignorance. The reality is that everyone wants an end to COVID-19 and the rules, but healthcare workers, immunocompromised individuals, parents with young children, and anyone who is vulnerable do not have that privilege.
