Riley’s Core Competencies

Communication Creative Thinking Critical Thinking
In 20th Century World History, I created a presentation about a 19th century invasion which was an excellent example of communication because I demonstrated that I can communicate to a class for a long period of time without the aid of a script.  This presentation also showed how I can think and communicate quickly on the spot because my classmates were tasked to ask me questions about information that I didn’t cover to make sure I did my research.  There were few questions because I had a brief, but information packed presentation, but when there were questions, I made sure to answer confidently and clearly.         In woodwork 12, I created a hockey jersey out of maple wood, which was an excellent example of creative thinking because I demonstrated that I can generate creative ideas and put them into reality.  Before taking woodwork, I was rarely able to come up with creative ideas, let alone put them into existence; however, this course helped me develop those skills.  Since enrolling in this course, I have been able to express the creative side of myself more often.  For example, for my capstone presentation, I’m constructing a model of the back out of Play Dough.  I would have never been able to do this before woodworking, so this course has greatly helped me find another part of myself that I would have never discovered without it.   In Anatomy & Physiology 12, our class did a lab about lung capacity where you had to blow into a balloon and mark how large the balloon inflated which was an excellent example of critical thinking because I demonstrated that I can analyze and critique data that I come up with.  This was an interesting lab because we had to compare data with our classmates, and it was interesting to see the different results everyone had.  This improved my critical thinking skills because I had to conclude why certain people’s data was different.  Was it their size, athletic ability, or solely weak lungs?  This was all tasked to try and discover, which was difficult; however, it drastically mproved my crtical thinking skills.
Social Responsibility Personal and Cultural Identity Personal Awareness and Responsibility
During of off block, I’ve noticed my neurodivergent friend has been eating alone and has no one to sit with, so often I go and visit and give him someone to talk to and eat with which was an excellent example of social responsibility because I demonstrated that I can recognize when someone’s in need of someone to talk to.  This is a great experience for us both because we’re both constantly smiling and laughing.  This gives me an opportunity to realize how some people are less fortunate than others and how we should realize how fortunate we are.  This was a great example of social responsibility because I saw someone with less support than me and I took action and made him feel joyful.          In Anatomy & Physiology 12, I did a lab about blood types, where you’re able to find out what your blood type is which was an excellent example of personal identity because I learned someething about my personal identity that I didn’t know before the class.  I found out that my blood type is AB which I found intriguing because I was the only one in the class with that blood type.  This helped me figure out more about myself that I would not have known if I didn’t take this course.
In Woodwork, you’re not always watched and monitored by the teacher because there is so much going on, so you must self-manage your productiveness   which was an excellent example of personal responsibility because I demonstrated that I can stay on task without reminders.  Most of the time, I look around and see many of the students not getting things done, so I told myself that I wasn’t going to be like them and finish as many projects as possible.  This reflects my personal awareness and responsibility because I could be on my phone or messing around, but I choose not to and do as much as I can.

My Core Competencies

CommunicationCreative ThinkingCritical Thinking
In New Media 11, I did multiple discussions in groups, which was an excellent example of communication because it shows how I can confidently speak in front of a group of other people about a topic I’m not familiar with.  This helped me get more comfortable around others and helped me build my confidence around presenting and talking about topics I don’t normally talk about outside of school.                  In Foods 12, I did a presentation about food I cook at home, which was an excellent example of communication because I demonstrated that I could express my thoughts into words without needing a script.  This shows how I can express myself in front of a class, while keeping my composure and expressing myself clearly about my personal life.                 In foods 12, I designed and made a cake, which was an excellent example of creative thinking because it forced me out of my comfort zone and made me think creatively about the design, flavour, and cooking process.  This creative thinking assignment made me push myself and innovatively create something I’ve never created or tried before.              In Life Sciences 11, I did an inquiry assignment about if homemade fertilizer is better than artificial fertilizer, which was an excellent example of creative thinking because I demonstrated that I could come up with a problem that’s completely original.  We were forced to try an experiment that’s never been done before and that pushed me to creatively think about something completely original.   In New Media 11, I did a character analysis about Ted Lasso, which was an excellent example of critical thinking because it forced me to analyse and critically think about his character development throughout the first season, which I haven’t thought about in the past.  This made me go deep into his character and critically think about his internal and external conflicts, his wants and fears, and his overall character development.              In New Media 11, I had to conclude about who murdered a high school in the podcast Serial, which was an excellent example of critical thinking because I demonstrated that I could come to a conclusion even with an anecdotal set of evidence.  This forced me to critically think because there were multiple pieces of evidence from different people saying different things, so I had to think about which person’s telling the truth.
Social ResponsibilityPersonal and Cultural IdentityPersonal Awareness and Responsibility
In my off block, me and two of my friends got Rajan a gift for his birthday, which was an excellent example of social responsibility because it showed how we respect and honour everyone at the school, no matter what they look like, what they wear, or how they act.  This showed a lot about our character and how we are as people because we showed responsibility and friendship.         In Foods 11, I wash the dishes everyday so that my peers don’t have to, which was an excellent example of social responsibility because I demonstrated that I can take care of myself and others without being asked or persuaded.  I don’t mind washing the dishes and since I can do it for my other classmates to make them happier makes me happy.                     In Foods 11, I did a food philosophies project, which was an excellent example of personal identity because I had to create an appetizer, a main dish, and a dessert based off my family’s culture and where we come from.  This expressed my personal and cultural identity because I got to learn about our ancestry and the find out what the countries’ food is like.            In French 11, I did a project about my heritage, which was an excellent example of personal identity because I demonstrated that I could talk about where my family came from and express my feelings about it.  This assignment helped me further understand where my family comes from and our history.
In my free time, I break up homework and free time equally, which was an excellent example of personal awareness and responsibility because I acknowledge I must do all my schoolwork, but I also acknowledge that I need mental health breaks, so I go out with friend, play golf, and play hockey.  This helps me be personally aware and responsible because I can focus more during the time that I am doing schoolwork, qand I can enjoy myself without having to worry about it during my free time.        In Chemistry 11, I did a lab where I had to deal with fire, which was an excellent example of personal responsibility because I demonstrated that I am fully capable of keeping myself safe and using safety goggles as awareness that I could get burned.  Since I was always wearing my safety goggles and I was responsible with the fire, I didn’t burn myself and it was a great learning experience.

Digital Learning Final Project

Microsoft Streamhttps://web.microsoftstream.com/video/d880b073-962e-4e14-902e-b0eb46dd20c0

In this final project for my digital leaning assignment, I chose to make a video about teaching you how to juggle because I just learned it myself and I think it’s a cool skill to have. I chose juggling out of everything in the world because it doesn’t take a long time to learn and it’s also fun to learn too. I also chose juggling because I learned to juggle while I was in Mexico on the beach in the sun and I hope everyone who watches this video will have a lot of fun learning to juggle just like I did.

Semester 1 project

This is a assignment that I made in English 9. In this project we were told to create a short story and since it was almost Christmas break, we made a story about an Evil Santa trying to ruin Christmas. I am very proud of this assignment because we put in a great group effort and worked very hard to try and achieve our goal of getting an A. We ended up getting the A and our teacher told us that we got the A because we used a flipbook and we were very creative with our ideas.

This is a picture of the cover of the book. We continued to write a 2000 word, 11 page book and felt very proud the the finished product!

English 9 Final Reflection

This is an assignment I am proud of. It’s a flipbook that I made with Kai and Avery about a fake Santa and how Christmas is ruined that year. It was my first time creating a story and me and my partners had a lot of fun doing it.

“This visual representation reflects the Core Competency: Thinking and how I grew in that competency in English 9 because…The words represent my thoughts. I chose to symbolize my thoughts as a brain because a brain is the main function of the body. Also, my Core Competency is thinking and the brain is a great image to represent that.

Break the Fake part II

Step 1:  I found a video off of google news.  It’s a video of a skydiver’s parachute not opening until the last second.

Step 2:  I went to search “Rumble” on Twitter and saw that they had 100k followers and also had the blue check mark so that’s a good sign.

Step 3: I searched up ‘Rumble” on Wikipedia and it had the exact same information as their Twitter page.  Rumble has been a website since 2013 and they post small videos of news articles.

Step 4: Search up the news article of a skydiver’s parachute not opening until the last second on Snopes.com and this will determine if the article is real of if it’s fake.  This article was posted 9 hours ago and as of right now, Snopes doesn’t seem to have written a article about this yet.

Step 5: Check other reliable sources to see if anyone else has posted about this article.  I searched the article up on Google and there were multiple other websites who posted about this article.

Step 6: In conclusion, I didn’t find any information on Snopes but all the other sources were reliable so I think this video is real!

Advertisement and Persuassion

My Advertisement:

Persuasion and Advertisement Techniques:

In my project about persuasion my topic was that I was trying to make people “buy” my skates.  This project was helping us understand how companies on social media trick us into buying their products and we had to make an advertisement here.  There are 3 types of persuasion, there is ethical, emotional, and logical and in my presentation I used ethical because ethical means that someone famous is modeling for the product or also saying a quote.  My advertisement is ethical because Connor McDavid who is the best hockey player in the world right now is saying a quote that is “Once you start, you won’t be able to stop” which is referencing the new and improved speed of these skates but also once you buy them, you won’t regret it.  The techniques I m using here is special offer and also bandwagon because bandwagon means that someone is saying this product and you should buy it and my advertisement is saying pretty much that.  This project is supposed to make you want to buy this product but also to help you understand what and what not to believe on the internet.

Core Competency Reflection:

I can tell the difference between opinions and facts.  During this past week, we learned about persuasion and that in some people’s presentations, they opinions about things they were working on but there were also some facts and now I know what are facts and what are opinions.  I can persevere challenging tasks and take ownership of my goals.  This past week, we needed to do a presentation in front of the whole class and one of my least favorite things and one of my fears is to present in front of people but I did and did a good job of it.  I can understand and share information about a topic of interest in a clear, organized way.  This week, I made a PowerPoint about persuasion and at first, I was very confused but after a couple days I got used to the information and understood it and then made a long PowerPoint about the topic so I felt proud that I got to know this information in under five days.  I can form new ideas to create new things.  This week, I had a lot of ideas of what my PowerPoint should be about and I finally decided on making a persuasive advertisement about my skates.
