Assignment 4C: Coast Salish Art Reflection & Post
Coast Salish Art Reflection
a. How has your awareness of Coast Salish Art in our community changed? Be specific and give at least one example.
So far, before this lesson, I had been unaware of any of the substantial differences in Indigenous art pieces. To me, everything of this art style had amounted to a formation of shapes placed smart ways for the end result to form what I viewed as something relatively abstract. All of it looked the same to me. I was wrong, however. To start, the shapes used in Coast Salish arts were different with the consideration of, for example, Northwest Coast art. From a glance, the fact that Northwest Coast artworks are imbued with ovoids while Coast Salish are made up of mix of trigons, circles, crescents, and extended crescents, to name but a few, seems like a nominal observed distinction. This is untrue. It also has to be mentioned that other than the shapes, the style differs between the two greatly. It seems to me that Coast Salish art is, to an extent, far minimalist and straightforward. On the contrary, Northwest Coast art is more codified and abstract and detail intensive. This DL session taught and substantiated to me the distinctions between the many Indigenous art styles.
