Block 4 Digital Learning Assignment | Devil’s Den Promotion – Entrepreneurship + Marketing 9

  1. Connecting Core Competencies
Period 4 for me was taken up by Entrepreneurship + Marketing 9 with Ms. Maras. In it, we were required to make an digital promotional advert for ‘Devil’s Den, a student-run store located near the cafeteria that would be selling chips, drinks, candy bags, and such. For it, we were to use Canva to design our own advertisement. I’d never actually employed the use of Canva before (entirely employed, I did touch it very slightly) only stood alongside people who’ve used it-never personally. So, I had to get familiar with the tool which really wasn’t difficult at all but it was a step regardless.
With the BC Curriculum, to confidently cement the strive for students to be mindful of their growth, there lies ‘creative thinking’ as a friend in the procedure. That one core competency is this one. This competency ties directly to my project because it emphasizes the importance of presenting ideas in an imaginative and in ways which I think, differs one’s work from others as stuff like this ties a personal process to the creator. With advertisements, information which is going to be on the blurb. I would not try to make an advert for a business by throwing up whatever info that fed me onto the canvas. The information should definitely not be the twin of splattering paint on canvas with lacking thought and rhythm creating a chaotic abstract mess, leaving it as dead as flat vermin on a backroad. You need your mind and forge whatever with creativity. I kept in mind to refrain from spewing mere information about Devil’s Den—I used visual elements, colors, and a maybe cringe phrase of words to craft a design that grabs attention and leaves an impression. I chose this competency because it highlights the difference between simply dumping information on a canvas and intentionally arranging it to create something engaging and memorable.
  2. Learning from Digital Tools
Using Canva to present my assignment was a mix of helpful and challenging. The biggest benefit was how easy it was to use. The interface is really intuitive, and it made designing the poster quick and simple. I had access to lots of templates, fonts, and images, which gave me a lot of creative freedom. However, one challenge was not overcomplicating the design. With so many options available, it was tempting to add too many elements, but I had to remind myself that the goal was clarity and impact, not just decoration. Finding the right balance of creativity and simplicity took some time, but overall, Canva made the process faster and more flexible. And, the 2nd point for the challenging edge of Canva–which I would actually place it before sans narrative order–was the limited elements I could place. I didn’t have Canva+ (no one did in my class) so it was a bit annoying and at times troubling because there were ideas I wanted on the poster which I could not do because of it.
  3. Application in Other Courses
Canva would be good in other courses, such as history or science. For example, in a history class, I could use Canva to create an engaging timeline of historical events, combining images, dates, and descriptions to make a visually appealing representation of information or in my analogy, the paint. In a science course, I could design a vibrant infographic to present data from an experiment, making it easier to explain results and draw connections. I say ‘would be good’ but I can go even as far and say it is good in other courses because I’ve used it for a socials project which included creating dining menu in mind of a historical empire esque theme. But as I’ve mentioned above, that was not as in depth of a utilization compared to this time so it was definitely a giver of a better realization of Canva.
