The Engineer Design Process (2)

My partner and I have finally started to design our device. Right from the start we experienced some problems. Previously I did some research on micro bits and how to figure out the codes. As I familiarized myself, I realized our idea might have been a bit complicated. Making the invention respond to a certain phrase or a sound was unrealistic.

  • The phrase concept is probably too difficult for us since we’re not very experienced at micro bits.
  • If there was a dog in the room the lights would go wild from the barking.
  • A thunderstorm or rain might affect the invention.
  • We might not be able to figure out how to program it to just respond to claps.

Caelyn and I both thought about the best way to keep our micro bit related to light switches but make it simpler. So, we decided to use a motion sensor to set off an alarm. We can place the invention beside a doorway but high enough for it to not be set off by dogs or babies. By walking by the micro bit, the motion will trigger an alarm. It will remind you to turn off a light when you walk out or into a new room.

This sensor may also work for a burglar alarm. If it’s late at night when everyone is in bed and you hear an alarm go off, you’ll know it’s because someone has entered your house or room.
