Core Competency

The core competency I chose is communication. I used to be very nervous and hesitant to be a leader in my school and community, for speaking to people I did not know stressed me out, but now I have taken many leadership roles. In the future, I will continue to put myself out there and take chances to be a leader. A time when I was a leader was when I was captain of the school’s field hockey team. Over the two years that I was captain, I learned many things, such as the importance of having grit, being positive no matter what, having patience and the importance of encouragement.  I also learned how to work with players of all different levels, ages, and personalities. I found that out of all the core competencies, that communication worked best for my experience. It was important that I could give instructions to my team of both experienced and inexperienced players. It was also important for me to be the person who creates a bond with the team, so we can trust each other to achieve the goal of going to Fraser Norths, which we did. Through creating friendships with the players on my team, we were able to have the best season we have had in years. I continue to speak to a lot of them outside of the sport. I will definitely miss them and the team when I graduate this year.  At the end of my two years, when the season ended, I won a medal for being a valuable player, and an award for “Most Outstanding Academic Athlete”, which I am very grateful for. In the future, I would like to join more clubs, and continue to play field hockey, to further work on my leadership and communication skills. I would like to continue to search for roles that need strong communicators to help a group reach a goal. High school has taught me so many valuable lessons, but my improvement in communication will impact my life the most.
