Data Journalism – The incarceration rate of Black and Indigenous peoples in so called “Canada”

The incarceration rate of black and indigenous peoples in so called “Canada”

  • What is the overall topic and the goal of your project?

The overall topic and goal of my project was to touch on the ever-growing population of black and indigenous peoples that are being incarcerated. I talked about the percentages of black and indigenous peoples in prisons vs their white counterparts as well as why the black and indigenous population in “Canada” are being incarcerated at such a high rate. The last thing I talked about things you could do/think about to support the black and indigenous population here in so called “Canada”.

  • What tool did you use and what did you learn about it?

The tool  I used to make this infographic was Canva ,prior to this project i had never used this tool .I learned a lot about this platform through making this project. I learned how to format an infographic and how to make it visually pleasing as well as different ways to show data that would be easy to understand. I will definitely be using this tool again as now I know how easy and simple it is to display data and information effectively in an infographic using Canva.

  • How has the process of utilizing this tool impacted your understanding of how technology can change (or help) the world?

Whilst using this tool I have discovered how using  Canva and similar sites can help show data and information in a different and easily comprehendible way. This shows how big of an impact technology can have on the world , we are now able to present data and information in ways that are clear and concise due to the tools technology has gifted us , allowing people to process information quickly and easily.

Information fluency

I love nestle drumsticks.

For my research paragraph I have decided to research nestle drumsticks, specifically the history/origin of the nestle drumstick. Contrary to popular belief the original drumstick was not invented by nestle, rather two brothers by the names of Bruce and JT Parker in the year 1928. The two brothers took a plain established waffle cone and added a chocolaty coating and nuts to it. The name “drumstick” was later given to the invention by one of the parker brothers wives, as she noted that the frozen treat looked like a chicken leg, or what was more commonly referred to as a “drumstick” in the United States. It was not until decades later that this frozen delight was widely recognized, and Nestlé purchased the Drumstick Company in 1991. Nearly a century later there are many more flavors to choose from rather than just chocolate with nut flavor. Flavors including Classic, Simply Dipped, Pretzel Dipped, Crunch Dipped, Cookie Dipped, Mini Drums, Lil’ Drums, Sprinkled!, Super Nugget, and King Size. Even with all these flavor options the nestle drumsticks are constantly being replicated and knocked-off with big companies just trying to make a quick buck. Nestle drumsticks’ biggest competitor by far is Cornettos, developed in 1956 they share many qualities such as their non-soggy specialty cone. Many wonders which one is better, though Cornettos have a fun, catchy song (give it to me, a big ol’nut and chocolate dream) I firmly believe that nestle drumsticks will remain the superior frozen treat.

This source seems very reputable, the author has written many articles , though i could not find weather it was peer reviewed or not.

I wonder if this source if 100% reliable and not biased as it does not come from a very reputable source, it comes from a magazine. It has also not been peer reviewed.

Semester 1 Proud

The assignment I was proud of in semester one was my inquiry project for my social responsibility class. My inquiry question was “are humans naturally inclined to be selfish”. I am proud of this project as it took me all of semester one to complete . At the end I had reached the conclusion that no, humans are not naturally inclined to be selfish, rather it is the systems of which we live by and our society that forces us to act in self serving ways . This project was completed by answering three questions , are we born selfish , how our society/upbringing makes us selfish , and is there scientific evidence pointing to humans being selfish.  If this interests you I have imbedded my three rounds of research for you to read (This project was shared with others in blog posts , thus why it is formatted like that).

Break the Fake Pt. 2 – Amazon Fires Employees Who Didn’t Clock Out After Getting Buried In Rubble

A summary of the article

The article I chose was about how Amazon fired all employees at the facility who failed to clock out after they were buried in the rubble of the collapsing building during the aftermath of a tornado. Lewis Hogan, a human resources executive at amazon explained  “If your time card does accurately reflect when you stopped working on that day, then you are stealing from this company, plain and simple,”. Another executive explained “It’s frustrating enough to lose a warehouse during the holiday rush. But it is especially disheartening to learn that as they were trapped beneath tons of twisted steel and concrete, some of our team members actually attempted to make personal phone calls to friends and family while still on company time. These employees have been terminated.” At press time, Amazon had reportedly ordered all warehouse employees who remained on the premises to leave immediately or face trespassing charges.

Steps taken

The first step I took was verifying the source , I looked up the site “the onion” , where I had got the article . I found out that the onion only publishes satirical articles on international, national, and local news. Therefore I only had to take one step to find out that this story is fake , and that amazon did not actually fire the employees who did not clock out after getting buried in rubble.

Was it true or false?

This news article was in fact fake. While looking at this article I thought to myself wow this must be true, this seems like something that amazon would do , but after only one short Wikipedia search I was wrong.

Assignment from semester 1

An assignment from semester one that I am proud of is my socials project about the Libyan revolution. In this project my group members and I talked about the corrupt regime, symbols of this revolution, social medias role in the revolution ,the army’s role in the revolution , and the country’s current state. I am proud of this project as my group members and I worked very hard on the project  as well as the presentation, and it payed off.
