My Best Assignment from Semester One

For many years, I have not liked the idea of writting stories. This may be due to not having written many in the past; however, I believe that my dislike for story writting was due my inability to come up with good ideas. In English 9, I had to write a narrative story.

Note: It is worth pointing out that this story takes place thousands of years in the future, so there is a lot of futuristic or Sci-fi technology and scenarios.

In short, the story is about the conflict between humanity and a star that is headed towards the solar system. Tatum Dyson, the protagonist, is a vocal supporter of quickly constructing a megastructure called a “Stellar Engine,” a machine that takes energy from a Dyson Sphere to move the solar system. A Dyson Sphere is a megastructure that extracts energy from a star by swarming the star with solar panels. A Stellar Engine would thousands of years to move a solar system away from an incoming object. Although the results of a cosmic collison would wipe out humanity, the solar system government and the people would not take their idea seriously since the event is going to occur five millenia later. Tatum Dyson was not able to convince the government and people in time, but with talented scientists from many planets, Tatum and the scientists created a plan of letting the star pass through the planets, saving humanity. After this event, humans learned that people must think not in terms of years or decades, but millenia.

I am proud of this story because it had a good idea and received a good mark. Today, I laugh at my previous stories and how bad they were. For this story, with available knowledge in science and my creativity, I came up with a unique topic. For this assignment, I received a 18.5 out of 20, which is not perfect, but is much higher than I expected.

In a few years, I may also judge this story poorly, but for now, I would consider this some of the best work I have produced in grade 9 in semester one.
