For take your kid to work day, I went to Hillcrest Middle School since I could not stay with my parents. I stayed in Ms. Knights classroom, who was my former teacher and watched her teach her students. They read the last chapter of Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen and had a class discussion about some questions related to the book. I was able to ask the students about what they had been learning and their experience with their classmates so far. I also got to see a lot of my old friends and spent break times catching up with them. After lunch, the students had explorations so I went with my friend to her exploration and in the last block they were learning how to conjugate words in French. I had an amazing time watching the students learn and talk with their friends and it was a great opportunity for me to see what they are learning and how they are being taught.
- What did you hear, see, smell, and feel in the work environment on Nov. 1st?
I heard the loud yells of the class when they began talking before class started and their answers to the daily “would you rather” questions. I felt safe in the work environment because I knew that if something went wrong the staff would keep me and the students safe. I smelt a lot of candy because the kids were eating food in the morning, and I could smell it from my seat. I saw the posters that were placed around the classroom about their subjects, and I found my last year’s classes assignment that was posted on the board as an example. I felt proud of what we did and happy that the teacher placed it as an example for her new class.
- What about the environment would motivate you to wake up every day to attend work?
I think that looking forward to seeing the class and teaching them subjects I love would motivate me to wake up every morning to attend work and teach. The teacher always gives them a would you rather at the beginning of class to help calm them down and focus their mind. I would look forward to thinking of one every day and looking forward to hearing their answers.
- What about the work environment would discourage you from waking up every day to attend work?
Something about the work environment that would discourage me from waking up every day to attend is that the class would be loud and chaotic in the morning which would probably give me a headache early in the morning. They are very energetic and if the class was yelling and screaming in the morning, I would get mad at them and not look forward to continuing teaching them.
- What is ONE thing you found interesting about your workplace visit?
Something that I found interesting in the workplace was how the kids in the class were very talkative and chatty. The class seemed to like each other and were laughing and talking when they received free time. I found this interesting because last year when I was in grade 8, my class did not talk to each other, and we only talked to the people in our friend group. Another interesting thing I found out about was that the whole class was eating when class began. I don’t know if it was because it was Halloween the day before, however every kid was eating chips and candy at 8:50 in the morning.
