The topic I chose to take notes on was Caesar’s landing in Briton. I chose it because I am passionate about Roman history and history from that time. It interests me to learn about big events from so long ago. I like to learn about history from that time period and just older time periods in general. To give some context , Julius Caesar was the leader of the Roman Empire at the time and decided to invade Britain sometime around 50 BC. What I found out from my research was that his plans to invade Britain weren’t a secret to the Britons so they prepared to encounter the Romans and predictable landing spots. When the 80 Roman ships carrying two legions (the Tenth legion and the Seventh legion) arrived off the coast of Britain the Britons were ashore waiting for them. Caesar decided to wait for his cavalry which were sailed after the legions had left. Once all his ships were together offshore they sailed to near what is now known as Dover in England. On their voyage to Britain the Romans faced lots of natural problems like storms and tides but they made it across the channel anyways. The Briton’s followed the Roman ships along the shore to Dover and were waiting there. Caesar decided to land anyways and so the Romans disembarked from their ships in the shallow waters near the shore. They waded to shore and beat the Britons. It wasn’t an easy victory as the Briton’s were throwing javelins and teasing the Romans with cavalry whilst they waded ashore. But eventually they won and the Briton’s sued for peace.
