Core Competencies Reflection

In Marketing 10, I created my own personal logo, which was an excellent example of creative thinking because I demonstrated that I can innovatively develop ideas that represent and involve my interests, backgrounds, and personality for my logo. I’ve grown the most in my creative thinking competency because I was required to constantly and continuously generate different ideas to create a fun and interesting project or presentation. Next, I will focus on developing my creative thinking competency by immersing myself in different and unique ideas to gain inspiration to create novelty in my projects and presentations.

In Marketing 10, I did many presentations, which were an excellent example of communication because I demonstrated that I could present my work in an interesting way and collaborate with other people in my group to carry out and review our work. I’ve grown the most in my communication competency because I have started to connect and engage with the audience through eye contact. Next, I will focus on developing my communication competency by reflecting on my presentations or work to create goals based on what I want to improve on next time.

Core Competencies Reflection:

Personal and Social:

A core competency that I have chosen to reflect on is Personal and Social. One thing that I have contributed to my school is by participating in a school sport team, last semester. The sport team I spent my time going to the multiple try-outs to try and be selected was the grade 9 volleyball team. Although we didn’t win any awards, I spent a lot of my personal time improving my skills and techniques. I also put a lot of effort into showing up early to the practices to help set up the net with my teammates, so we can start our warmup early. During these practices, I learned from my coaches many techniques on how to defend and attack. These techniques that were taught to us came in handy during our games. I was also able to branch out and develop new relationships with many of my teammates.

This is a picture of me during a game:

Coast Salish Art:

This made my awareness of Coast Salish art in our community change because I am now able to understand the meaning behind each shape that is being used. For example, the circle that I’ve used for the eyes and other parts of my animal represents unity and centrality. I also realized that the shapes can be placed in a lot of places on the animal. Before we have ever touched upon the subject of Coast Salish art, I used to believe that each shape has its own spot on the animal that you can’t ever change. I’ve also been more aware of the differences between Coast Salish and Northwest Coast art. For example, Northwest Coast art uses the same but also different types of shapes than Coast Salish art.

Information Fluency

My paragraph:

Since a couple of years, there has been a rise in child labor throughout the U.S. Because of these corrupt companies, children, mainly in Central America, are practically pushed into a position where they would have no other choice but to work for extremely low wages. Some children were overseen by sponsors in the U.S. These sponsors would force these vulnerable children to work for these companies in places that were extremely dangerous for their health. The majority of these children, who are being exploited, are children that are indebt to people that helped them cross the border; therefore, they had to work in these companies to pay back their debt. These companies are hiring these children because for many reasons, but one of these reasons are the fact that there’s a shortage in workers. Because of this fact, the government of Iowa has passed a law that allows children as young as 14-years-old to work in factories.

AI-Generated Paragraph:

The current surge in child labor in the USA involving children from Central America is driven by a complex interplay of economic, social, and political factors. Many families from Central America migrate to the USA in search of better opportunities, but upon arrival, they often face significant barriers to employment and integration. Economic disparities and limited access to education in their home countries push families to seek better prospects elsewhere. However, upon reaching the USA, they may encounter limited employment options, forcing children to work in order to contribute to their family’s income. Additionally, the lack of legal pathways to migrate and obtain work authorization leaves families with few alternatives. The recent increase in migration from Central America, exacerbated by factors such as violence, poverty, and natural disasters, has further strained resources and heightened vulnerabilities among migrant families, leading to a rise in child labor. Addressing the root causes of migration and providing comprehensive support for migrant families, including access to education, legal protection, and economic opportunities, is essential to addressing this concerning trend and ensuring the well-being of vulnerable children.

Reflection Questions:

  • What was your experience in using AI?

I realized that you had to add for specific information into the search bar in order to get specific results. Overall, it was a very easy experience using AI because I didn’t encounter many difficulties except for one.

  • Was the paragraph the AI generated accurate? Fact-check any new information and see if it’s true.

The AI generated paragraph was accurate because there was a lot of information from other sources that state similar information to the ones that were given/written by AI.

  • Was the exercise useful? How can this help you with your learning going forward?

The exercise was useful because you can use AI as a starting place in your future work. You can ask AI about your subject, and it will give you information relating to your subject that you’ve requested. After receiving the information, you can look at other reliable sources to verify the AI’s information but to also expand the information on that subject.

  • Were your results expected? Yes or No? Explain.

No my results were not expected because there are a lot of  situations and problems that caused child labor to rise; as a result, I didn’t know which area that the AI would write about concerning this subject.

Break the Fake – Article claiming that a train, carrying propane, was derailed a few miles from Florida airport.

I found an article from NBC News claiming that a train, carrying propane, was derailed a few miles from Florida airport, on the 28 of February, 2023. The article included a photo of a derailed train. The article also claims that no one was injured, but the cause for the derailment was unclear; therefore, I wanted to find out if the claims and photo from this article were true or false.

1. My first step is by using Wikipedia to verify if NBC News is a reliable source. I found out that NBC News is America’s number-one-rated morning newscast, and it’s been around since the 21 of February, 1940.

2. My second step to verify this article was by using Snopes. I found out that a train, carrying propane, was derailed in Florida, on the 28 of February, 2023; which means, the NBC News article’s claims were true.

3. My third step to verify this article was by using TinEye. After using TinEye, I found out that the photo from NBC News’ article has not been modified in any way.

4. My last step to verify this article was by using Google to see if there are other articles that have the same claims as NBC News’ article. I found out that there are many different articles from many different well-known sources that claim the same thing as NBC News’ article.

In conclusion, I believe that the claims from NBC News’ article are true after I verified by using multiple different ways.

Take your kids to work day

On Take your kids to work day, I decided to go with my dad to his workplace. My dad works in Burnaby at a company called Mail O Matic as a printing press operator. During this time, I got the opportunity to look at all the different departments there. I visited the department that uses UV to print the envelopes, the department that uses Laser to print the envelopes, the design department, and the meeting/office area.

When I walked around the building, I visited different parts of the company that smelled and sounded all different. In the department that uses UV to print the envelopes, there was a faint scent of paper; however, in the department that uses Laser to print the envelopes, there was a very heavy and overwhelming scent of ink and paper. The department that uses UV to print the envelopes is very loud, so everyone had to wear earplugs. It was the opposite for the department that uses Laser to print envelopes because it was very quiet in that department. All I could see in these departments were big, tall machines since I wasn’t allowed to get near the machines. Because of safety reasons, I was only allowed to stand behind a blue line; therefore, I couldn’t get an up-close look at the actual mechanism of all the machines that I saw. There’s an office upstairs that houses the offices of the president, vice president, and the people that work on the design part of the envelope. The office area is very quiet, and I couldn’t detect any scent from there. In the office area, there’s a fish tank with all types of GloFish.

I would feel motivated to wake up every day to attend work because of the people and the welcoming environment at my place of work. Everyone there was very welcoming, and they were very helpful when I needed help or had any questions.

I would feel discouraged to wake up every day to attend work because of the overwhelming scent of ink and paper. When I was there, the smell was very overwhelming and almost intoxicating, so I could not spend more than a few hours there.

One thing that I found interesting about my workplace visit was when I got to look at the design progress of the envelopes. The reason why it was interesting to find out about the design progress of the envelopes was because I really like to design and to see how other professionals design their work; therefore, it was an eye-opener because I was able to see the design progress of the envelopes.
