Core Competency Self-reflection

Core Competency: Creative Thinking

Subsection: Evaluating and Developing

This semester I have learned how to write good film scripts. I have written scripts in Film (obviously) and in English. Prior to this semester, I had no experience whatsoever on how to write script. The first draft that I wrote for my big film was bad with clunky, unnatural dialogue and incorrect formatting. Through refining my skills and meeting with my teacher, I was able to create a script of semi-competence.

This was the script that I based my film on and is much better than my initial draft.

Among the changes are formatting changes, dialogue changes and an entirely new ending. (My previous ending was just bad)

As of writing this document my film is not fully completed, so I cannot link a fully completed fill. The link below is missing just one scene.

(Minus 1 scene)

Throughout this creative process I was able to evaluate my work, find pieces I liked and remove and rethink scenes and lines I did not like.

During filming and editing I also had to design and plan out how I wanted my shots to look, who is in frame, and what every character should be doing. I think as I got farther into filming, my shots were better, with better variety and better coverage.

I also demonstrated this core competency during editing of my film. Learning how to use audio to create feeling and mood, while using cuts to create pace are techniques that I had to learn.

When thinking of plot, I rejected multiple ideas, as my ideas were either boring, hard to film, or not applicable for my experiences.  I had to ask for help to refine my dialogue and plot, as well with editing tips about what is the best way to create the feeling that I want.

Overall, when writing my script and then filming it, I evaluated and developed my film idea, first put into writing and then into video form.

Something to improve on: Working collectively

I am not bad at working collectively. I just don’t like to. A lot of the time, I feel like I can get everything done on my own with similar amounts of effort and time and create and better project. When I need help, I am good about asking for it, but I don’t like necessarily working with people to develop ideas together. My problem isn’t an inability to work with others, it is an unwillingness to want to. I would just rather work on my own where I have full control over what is being done. I need to work on being more willing to work collaboratively instead of defaulting to solo work.
