Western Sahara

The largest piece of land not an independent country and ruled by an independent country.

Western Sahara is located on the northwest coast of Africa. Bordered by Morocco to the north, Alegria to the east and Mauritania to the south the region is not ruled by any country and is not an independent country. The largest type in the world. (excluding Antarctica). Western Sahara is not good for farming, relatively remote and the climate is harsh. The region has some resources, phosphates and other natural materials plus much coast line for fishing and other marine activities.

The territory was initially claimed by Spain in the 1500’s, Morocco captured the region and held it until 1884, Spain ruled and in 1955 united the north and the south together into Spanish Sahara. Nationalists in Spanish Sahara sought to control the region and Spain decided to grant the territory to Morocco and Mauritania. Rebels pressure forced to Mauritanians to withdraw their claim, but Morocco has fought a 25-year war over the territory. The Sahrawi democratic Arab party governs the part of western Sahara controlled by the Sahrawis.  Much of western Sahara is controlled by Morocco but the people are not Moroccan and want independence.
