Core Competencies

In Fashion 12, I demonstrated the creative thinking core competency when I had to create a haute-couture garment based off of a classic Halloween costume. I demonstrated creative thinking because at the start, I was stressed because I wasn’t sure which costume to do and how I should make it high-end. I tried to find a costume that I could make culturally significant that people would still recognize. I decided to do a skeleton costume so I could add details from Mexican culture. In the end, I created an amazing presentation and my creative thinking helped me create a unique and haut-couture design.

Reflections of Semester 2

Hi everybody! Today I’m going to be sharing an assignment that I was really proud of.

I know this may seem like an obscure answer, but the project that I have been the most proud of this semester was my second choir assignment; Singing a portion of the song “Meadowlark”. I’m proud of this assignment because I truly understood what I learned. I had been really stressed about learning that song because my vocal group had a harmony that I just couldn’t get. I was getting really frustrated about it, so the assignment helped me a lot. It gave me an opportunity and a reason to focus on the harmony, which eventually helped me get the harmony and I did well on the assignment. In future, I can focus more on working to be able to do the harmony proficiently before the assignment becomes my motivator, but I was just glad that I finally understood it.

Coast Salish Art Reflection

My awareness of Coast Salish Art in my community has definitely changed because before I did this activity, I knew that the animals had meanings but not that the symbols on the animals also had their own symbolism. At my old school, they had a first nations statue in the foyer, and I always admired how elegant and sophisticated the statues looked, but never examined how each groove and indent could symbolize what the animal represented and how it became the animal it is today.

Infographic: Polynomials

Hello everybody! Today I will be sharing a presentation on Polynomials to help give a better understanding to the polynomials unit, unit 4. Enjoy!

1. Connecting Core Competencies

I feel as though I used my critical thinking throughout this assignment, specifically my critiquing and analyzing skills during this assignment because I had to go through all of the information provided to me about unit 4 and look online to decide what information would be important enough to include in my presentation because my goal was a fluid presentation that didn’t drag on. I also had to analyze specific pieces of information to cut down on my descriptions to be able to present the most understandable presentation. I chose this core competency because in the past, I have had difficulty deciding what information was necessary. Therefore,  this core competency had definitely been an area of growth for me.

2. Learning from Digital Tools

Using Canva throughout this assignment has felt like a blessing to me. I am not the most familiar with the website but I was shocked on how easy it was to develop my ideas. Canva felt very fluid in the sense that almost anything was possible, whether it being adding designs to my presentation or inserting extra details such as the voice recording. The whole process felt natural to me. The only thing I would change about Canva is to be a bit more precise with the results from my searches to help with the general fluidity of the website. But other than that, Canva is a stellar website that I would definitely recommend using!

3. Application in Other Courses

I can definitely see myself using Canva in other courses. Personally, I have found Canva to be more helpful and precise with my work than other websites and/ or apps such as Powerpoint. I can see this being beneficial in other courses such as science because I can create multiple slides that can function as zooming into a part of a bigger picture, such as an organism I could be analyzing for a science project. In the future, I could see Canva replacing other websites and/ or apps for schools as well.

Take your kid to work day!

For take your kid to work day, I went with my mom to work at her office, the Public Guardian and Trustee (PGT). Though I can’t explain much about the day I had at my mom’s work due to the nature of the job, I would still love to share a brief summary with everyone about my day. There were 4 of us in the group and we started the morning with a job-shadow and a bit of free time, followed by a tour of the computer server room. Next, we had a short break then headed to the investigations room. After that, we headed  to the mail room to sort through certain mail. At that point, it was around mid-day, so we had a pizza lunch with the other kids in the group and their parents. Up next was the ancestry/ will room where we learned about family trees. After that we did a dollars and sense seminar where we discussed what was important to us and how to spend money responsibly. Finally we continued with our job-shadowing before heading home.

Questions:

  1. What did you hear, see, smell, and feel in the work environment on Nov. 6th? Use details

I saw many cubicles as I was walking around the office. It smelled like dust, and everything was very gray. Though it sounds somber, I had a wonderful time. Everyone working there was very energetic, and I could hear people working hard and typing away throughout the day. I felt lots of desks throughout the day as my group was being moved from floor to floor.

  1. What about the environment would motivate you to wake up every day to attend work? Why?

As I had said earlier, the environment didn’t leave much to be desired, but I would say that the people are the reason I would want to wake up every day and attend that job. Though the job is very challenging and mentally draining, the people are very bright and tie the job together with their support. They must deal with deep, disheartening stuff daily and still manage to keep the workplace a positive environment.

  1. What about the work environment would discourage you from waking up every day to attend work? Why?

The general look of the office is something that really would discourage me from working a job like that. The general look of the office is giving rainy day, and I feel as though I would want a livelier environment when I eventually join the workforce. Also, I feel as though I would want a work environment with more socialization because I am a very social person and struggle to stay alone all day. Though I can never be sure because I only really spent one day in my mom’s office.

  1. What is ONE thing you found interesting about your workplace visit? Why?

There was a part in the presentation that we learned about investigators at the PGT. One of the things that the investigators at the PGT must do is sometimes to go into homes of people who have passed away to do an inventory of the items in their home. Sometimes that means that the investigators must wear special suits because of what’s going on in the home. Over the years, the PGT investigators have found many things that are very unique that they store in their warehouse.

Thanks!
