Your Charles Best Digital Portfolio

Welcome to your Digital Portfolio at Dr. Charles Best. We provide a unique and innovative digital culture for all students to learn in. We are a 1:1 school which means each and every student and staff member uses a device to enhance teaching and learning, and most importantly, help prepare our students with tools and skills to be successful in the future. In order to ensure the success of the 1:1 program we have put in place a variety of support systems.

If you ever need assistance with technology please visit the Digital Literacy Room beside room 202.

In their classes, students will be required to demonstrate the ability to efficiently and effectively navigate digital technologies while behaving ethically, responsibly and protecting personal security and privacy.

Digital Footprint

A digital footprint is the collection of all the traces you leave in electronic environments as you use or move through them. Some is content you actively volunteer—like your Facebook profile. Other material is passive—the cookies a site stores in your browser, the content your district collects about your use of their equipment, etc. All this data can be aggregated to build a profile of you and your behavior.

Tips for Creating a Positive Digital Footprint

  • Always THINK
  • Never post anything that you might find embarrassing later.
  • Be careful with the pictures you post on your public profiles. Remember others will see them and judge you based on their content.
  • Change the privacy settings on your social networking sites so that only your Friends can see your information
  • Do not disclose your personal address, phone number, passwords. Bank card numbers…etc even in private messages. There is always the possibility of somebody hacking into your account and finding them.
  • Do not post things to bully, hurt, blackmail, insult, or afflict any kind of harm on others
  • Always keep in mind that once information has been posted online, it can be almost impossible to remove because of archiving and file sharing. Even though you deactivate your accounts, the information may still be retrieved by others.

Core competency 2024

Communication

In Photography, I presented a photo series to the class. This was a great example of communication because I explained my creative choices clearly and used the right photography terms. I also listened to feedback and responded thoughtfully. I’ve grown in my ability to present ideas confidently. Next, I’ll focus on improving my communication by practicing public speaking during future presentations.

Creative Thinking

In Photography, I did a photo composition project where I experimented with angles, lighting, and storytelling. This showed creative thinking because I found new ways to see and capture ordinary subjects. I’ve grown by taking creative risks and exploring unique perspectives. Next, I’ll push my creative thinking by trying new editing techniques and challenging myself to tell deeper stories through photos.

Critical Thinking

In Biology, I worked on a lab experiment about cellular respiration. This was a good example of critical thinking because I analyzed results, interpreted data, and found explanations for unexpected outcomes. I’ve learned to ask better questions and problem-solve through challenges. Next, I’ll continue improving my critical thinking by connecting concepts to real-world examples and digging deeper into my analysis.

Social Responsibility

In English, I took part in a group discussion on themes in literature. This showed social responsibility because I contributed to the conversation while encouraging others to share their thoughts. I’ve grown by learning to listen to different perspectives and collaborate better with my classmates. Next, I’ll continue to support group projects by helping everyone feel included and valued.

Personal and Cultural Identity

In English, I reflected on Indigenous literature and connected it to my experience as an immigrant. This showed personal and cultural identity because I realized how stories from different cultures share similar struggles and values. I’ve grown by appreciating the importance of diverse voices. Next, I’ll explore more literature from different cultures and reflect on how it connects to my own experiences.

Personal Awareness and Responsibility

In Math, I completed a difficult problem set that required focus and persistence. This showed personal awareness because I recognized my strengths in problem-solving and worked to improve in areas I found challenging. I’ve grown by learning to manage my time better and ask for help when needed. Next, I’ll stay organized and set goals to keep improving in math and other subjects.
