Semester 2 Core Competency Reflection

The assignment I am most proud of this semester is the Pecha Kucha. This project was given to me in my Communications 9 class. The instructions given with this project were that there should be no big chunk of text on the PowerPoint and that you must be able to speak off your mind using the picture you chose. Each slide I had 20 seconds to talk before it switches automatically (15 slides total), which made it difficult as it was my first time talking around 4-5 minutes straight without the use of a script.

Grand Projet #2 (Pecha Kucha)

Last year, or even this year I would not be comfortable talking for anymore than 2 minutes straight without notes but after completing and presenting this project I feel more confident about my speaking abilities. For this project, the topic I chose was sleep and how a lack a sleep can be detrimental to our body and health. Throughout this project, I learned more about sleep and its importance while also further enhancing my communication skills. As preparation for this project, I practiced a tremendous amount of times repeating what I wanted to say, to the point where the words practically flowed out of my mouth. One fact I remember from this project is that teenagers (ages 14-17) need a minimum of 8 to 10 hours of sleep. With this information, I try my best to achieve at least 8 hours of sleep each day.

Coast Salish Art Reflection

In the past I was taught very little if not anything at all about Coast Salish art. But after our recent DL session during I-Week I now have a different perspective of their art. I used to think that the shapes were just randomly mixed up and created. However, now I understand there are 3 main shapes (ovals/circles, trigons and crescents/extended crescents). To further add to my knowledge, the activity which we had to draw Coast Salish art by hand and in Inkscape helped me even more to understand the meanings and helped me appreciate more the unique art of Coast Salish.

Below are my 2 drawings:

1. Connecting Core Competencies

For this section I chose “critical thinking” because during the entirety of this project, I often found myself analyzing and trying to develop my project to the best of my abilities. For example, the images and the font sizes. I was told by a peer that my font looked a bit “off” so I re-looked at the font and found a better font. Thanks to that person’s constructive criticism, I now have a better aesthetically pleasant project.

2. Learning from Digital Tools

While working on this project, I learned that creating a poster wasn’t so difficult at all, I just needed to take the time and reflect. I learned how to fit/adjust the text and fonts to make the most of out the white space I was given. There was tons of benefits of using Canvas. It was simple, easy to navigate (extremely important for beginners) and had an immense amount of creative functions, such as the built in web searcher to find images. There was only one disadvantage of using Canvas and it is how it doesn’t know how to pick up French words. Which is why I decided to write all my work in a separate word doc to ensure that I have all my errors fixed and of course the French accents (ex: é, à, etc.)

3. Application in Other Courses

The first course that popped up in my mind when thinking about Canvas was Marketing. Next term I’ve got Marketing and with my newfound knowledge of Canvas and its abilities, I am extremely confident that I would be able to create a great poster, if presented the opportunity. You can use Canvas for any other classes as well, as the functions are not limited by your subject. Canvas can be used similarly to PowerPoint, there’s a function to make a presentation and I think that Canvas is a great alternative if you don’t want to use PowerPoint but still want great results.
