Take Your Kids to Work Day

TOKTWD

On November 6th I went to my Dad’s work office. My dad works for the federal government. During the day, I sat in his office while he took calls and managed his work. It was a really eye opening experience. I didn’t truly understand what actual “work” is but after going to my Dad’s workplace I now have a better perspective of what work truly is. I am appreciative of what my Dad does for his job daily, he must commute at least 1h a day by sky train alongside a 10 minute walk to his office.

1) What did you hear, see, smell, and feel in the work environment on Nov. 6th? Use details

I see many small offices (an office my dad and I are in), desks, computers and a lot of lockers located all around the 17th floor. I smell clean air, since my dad works for the government, the workplace is not supposed to smell like anything. I feel hot and most importantly safe, the 17th floor has its heat quite high, and it also has this sense of security.

2) What about the environment would motivate you to wake up every day to attend work? Why?

I like how the environment is calm and tranquil unlike during school hours. I like the space, and it would motivate me to wake up every day and be excited to go to work.

3) What about the work environment would discourage you from waking up every day to attend work? Why?

I don’t like how we’re on the 17th floor. I have a severe fear of heights and just being in this building frightens me a bit. So, height would be a factor that would discourage me from waking up and attending work.

4) What is ONE thing you found interesting about your workplace visit? Why?

I found that the desks placed all around the workplace were interesting. These desks were installed with the intention of it being used for sitting and standing. It has a unique switch that can be used to elevate or lower the desk.

1. Connecting Core Competencies

For this section I chose “critical thinking” because during the entirety of this project, I often found myself analyzing and trying to develop my project to the best of my abilities. For example, the images and the font sizes. I was told by a peer that my font looked a bit “off” so I re-looked at the font and found a better font. Thanks to that person’s constructive criticism, I now have a better aesthetically pleasant project.

2. Learning from Digital Tools

While working on this project, I learned that creating a poster wasn’t so difficult at all, I just needed to take the time and reflect. I learned how to fit/adjust the text and fonts to make the most of out the white space I was given. There was tons of benefits of using Canvas. It was simple, easy to navigate (extremely important for beginners) and had an immense amount of creative functions, such as the built in web searcher to find images. There was only one disadvantage of using Canvas and it is how it doesn’t know how to pick up French words. Which is why I decided to write all my work in a separate word doc to ensure that I have all my errors fixed and of course the French accents (ex: é, à, etc.)

3. Application in Other Courses

The first course that popped up in my mind when thinking about Canvas was Marketing. Next term I’ve got Marketing and with my newfound knowledge of Canvas and its abilities, I am extremely confident that I would be able to create a great poster, if presented the opportunity. You can use Canvas for any other classes as well, as the functions are not limited by your subject. Canvas can be used similarly to PowerPoint, there’s a function to make a presentation and I think that Canvas is a great alternative if you don’t want to use PowerPoint but still want great results.
