July 27th, 2018

Today is a work day for you. Yet I would like to take this time to tell you our final plan for next week:

We still need to complete two sections of the tourism class in order for this to be a comprehensive session. The two sections we will complete in the next 4 days are as follows:

  1. Monday: You should be finished your Road Trip projects now, so we can work on our final part of the entire class. I can give you maybe 30 minutes. We will look briefly at what makes a restaurant work. In doing that, we will be looking through the lens of the customer experience. In doing so, we will be spending all of Today (Monday) working on an actual Yelp review you will publish. Here is the handout for that: Restaurant Yelp Review-2bf0569
  2. Tuesday we will be going over the final project on accommodation – looking at good hotels. I have a rough draft project for you to accomplish on this day with a handout sheet. You have Thursday to finish this big project. I have some examples of modern designs to show you.
  3. Wednesday, we will be going to Metrotown. Like I said, be at the classroom for 12:15PM Wednesday, August 1st!!
  4. Thursday: We’ll be finishing our actual final project on the floor design that should include both a rough and a good draft.
  5. Friday, I will be leaving a little early, but for the 1st hour, I want you to do a final assignment for me. This is not graded. After, I would like for you to go to the other Tourism class and watch a good movie. I will miss you, of course.

July 25th, 2018

We will finish off the Starbucks interviews today. I would like to hear everyone’s voice.

After, I would like for you to take some time for transportation research before we move on to our next project (that is due on Friday).

All of these questions are based on travel / transportation and can be found on the internet. I will be checking to see if you complete the packages on time. You have about an hour to finish these packages – with a partner would be OK.

Here is the Week 4 project I would like for you to do this week:

Transportation Week 4 Road Trip-qv0v9t

Road trip with all the terms you have just researched. I will help you a lot before this project, as it is very involved.

July 23rd, 2018

Today, we will start a small unit on hospitality and management of customers. I will start with a small lecture on this subject.

customer-service-presentation Week 4-16d56in

Take notes if you would like. This is good for overall knowledge of the hospitality sector of tourism and goes straight into our accommodations and transportation later in the week.

Also, I’d like to know your Myers Briggs scores. This might take a while. The official website is a paid one, but this is the closest I could find:

http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/jtypes2.asp

With this, you will get a four letter ‘personality’, This will indicate what you will be interviewed for and what type of personality best connects with you. This does not change that much throughout your life. I’ve done it about 10 times since I was about 18 years old. Still the same!

With that comes the final and most complex part of this Monday class:

The job interview.

When you’re in university here, you’ll have to get a job unless you’re stinking rich. Usually the job is in the ‘hospitality’ sector.

For fun, you will all be applying to Starbucks.

Let’s watch this video:

And fill out this paper:

Starbucks Interview Questions Week 4-15br35l

And get ready to be interviewed!

July 17th, 2018

Hand in your consent forms for Friday.

Here is the plan, broken down to segments so that it will be easier:

  1. Finish advertisement. (Do you need time?) – Participation mark.
  2. What is marketing? Package to hand out / Questions to complete. (Handout)
  3. Correct questions, talk about marketing general ideas.
  4. Hand out marketing final project. This is a brochure. I will go over the details with you in class. It will be due at the end of the class on Thursday!! (No presentation.)

Purdy Tourism Marketing Week 3-15qqzut

  1. If we have time, we will do a Canada map quiz / geography lesson.

July 16th, 2018

We will start off our brand new week with a quiz to see what kind of a traveler you are.

https://quiz.canada.travel/caen/

Now I have a Powerpoint Presentation on Vancouver – our city of choice for today’s assignment.

All About Vancouver-17gkcea

Since the major focus this week is on marketing a product, we will be talking about how selling an ‘experience’ is very important when it comes to tourism. A lot of countries need tourism to satisfy budgetary needs and to raise their own country’s GNP – or economy.

This includes Canada – a place we are residing in, but don’t know too much about yet.

We will start with Vancouver today.

Look at a brochure I have for you. Explore some of the more interesting attractions and sights.

http://digital.canadawide.com/i/964953-2018-2019

I have a print out of the assignment I’d like for you to complete. This assignment is about making your own advertisement based on what you find in the brochure.

This advertisement is due at the end of the class.

July 13th, 2018

We are going to bubble tea today. Yet before we go, it will be beneficial to do this pre-field trip exercise in order to get everything ready so that you know what to expect.

Please hand in your field trip consent forms and give me $4.00 for the trip next WEDNESDAY.

July 12th, 2018

Final day for your projects. This will be making them visually appealing and having what you will talk about flow well.

The groups for presentation (no longer than five minutes) will be as follows:

Lisa, Selina, Coco

Amy, Cathy, Chloe

Harry, Jim, Bill

John, Lucas, Allen

Luna, Tobby

Michael

Crystal, Olivia

Cindy, Phyllis

Ambrose, Cody

July 11th, 2018

Today is a work day for your projects. You can spend the day with your partners, come up with profiles and come up with a plan for the one tourist to have a good time in the country.

July 10th, 2018

Yesterday, we found out about the different types of tourists there were in the tourism industry. To know about a tourist is to know about how to get their money in the business!

We also did some book work based on the motivations of tourists. For the first part of class after the warm up activity (based on the motivations of customers) we will work on the package that we started together about tourist motivations.

Then I will introduce the project that will be due on Friday. You have the rest of class today and all of class tomorrow to work on this assignment. I will be helping you throughout the entirety of the project, so there’s no problem. It’s due halfway through Friday’s class where we will present your findings.

July 9th, 2018

These are the different types of tourists we have to be aware of.

This is an excellent slideshow I will share with you.

There are 10 tourist profiles.

Next week we will be doing a project on their visual representation – because profiling is fun!

If we have time after the quiz, I will have an interesting game for all of you to play regarding customer relations. A lot of you expressed interest in working with other people in your job interviews. Now it’s time to come up with situations where the customers / tourists /clients go bad. We will use a hotel for the background.

  1. let’s come up with problems at a hotel
  2. let’s come up with solutions
  3. now you can do your own. (you can write out examples if you’d like.)

The next thing to do is to read about the motivations of the traveler.

Why do we travel? Does everyone have different reasons?

What goal to we want to reach when we travel?

What does a traveler need in order to have a successful time away from home?

These are questions that will shape our week. There are many things planned, but now that you are familiar with the different sectors, we can go into the use of these sectors – that is the profile of the tourist.

So today, what I’d like to do is go over some book work together before we get into a project on the ‘appeal’ of travel.

If we have time, I would like for you to complete an assignment (You have two days) on travel to a specific country and how each of the tourist types can benefit.

Here is the assignment:

The Tourist Week 2 Project-1alobd6

July 6th, 2018

Today we will watch a video all about Canada.

We worked on the questions yesterday, yet some of you had a hard time with the difficulty of the text. This will be the last time we work with the workbook without a lot of help from me.

I was extremely impressed with your research on your chosen profession yesterday. Don’t forget it as we will be revisiting your chosen jobs near the end of the session.

Now when you watch the film, you will be looking at the different sectors of tourism – finding where they are in the film and then writing down what the sector is – and giving an example of a job in the sector.

Then we will have a quiz on sectors!

As long as you know what each sector of tourism is, we can go forward with the lessons planned. (Each week will be based on one of the sectors.)

July 5th, 2018

Our day will be to look up different jobs in each sector – you will choose one that you personally like as this is an individual project. I would like you to find out the following:

What is the job title?

How much is the entry level position salary? Is there room for growth?

How can you get this job? (examples: school / money / certification / job experience)

Why is this job appealing to you? During your research, do you still want to pursue this job?

This is one of the best sites for Canada to start:

https://www.jobbank.gc.ca/occupationsearch

We will be meeting in small groups 3-4 to talk about these jobs and I will give you my own personal knowledge of the jobs you chose. While you’re waiting, you can meet with the other groups and share your research.

Finally, we will be doing book work. You can either look at the PDF or I have printouts of the first chapter. The questions are on pages 10-24. Perhaps we will have time tomorrow to finish it as well. I will help you with some of the vocabulary.

That’s our day.

July 4th, 2018

Happy American independence day!

So we will spend the first part of class with the tourism sectors assignment. This project is very research heavy, but since all of you have your passwords and ID numbers, I think that we will have no problem with looking up the different sectors. You will complete a small poster with your group and show it to the class with a ‘gallery walk’.

The Eight Tourism Sectors-2nf8u8x

That’s our day.

July 3rd, 2018

Welcome to Tourism 11!

Today we will be doing quite a few new things. First, I’d like to get to know you and see why you’re here in class.

First, make a name card so that I can remember your names. It will take me about a week.

Here’s the plan:

  1. Getting to know you sheet
  2. What is tourism? Definitions around the class

Break

  1. What is the tourism career?
  2. Tourism ‘sectors’ assignment. (Due tomorrow)
  3. Take away discussion
