Final Assignment Coast Salish Art: Part 2

How has your awareness of Coast Salish Art in our community changed? Be specific and give at least one example.

Before this assignment I never understood the meaning behind Coast Salish Art and why certain shapes are chosen. However, after doing this assignment I now know the significance of these details. First, I understood that circles and ovals are placed in places to join the body of the animal. Second, I learned that crescents are placed as a tail or a mouth. In addition, I also learned about why certain animals are drawn and why they are chosen. For example, an eagle represents wisdom, courage, and strength. A deer represents balance, vulnerability, and gentleness. And a salmon represents renewal, wealth, and success. I have learned to focus on the details and understand the meaning behind the shapes. Overall, these past two assignments have increased my knowledge on Coast Salish Art.

Information Fluency Paragraph

Fast Fashion

My Paragraph:

New trends are spreading quickly and clothing is being wasted. Fast fashion is becoming a global issue that causes irreparable damage to the environment, overworks employees and harms animals. Many say “The desire for the newest trends causes consumers of fast fashion products to throw away these clothes after only wearing them a few times.” This causes over consumption in non- renewable resources and materials that can later lead to long term consequences. Moreover, fast fashion has become one of the main reasons for global warming, pollution and climate change. It is said that “In order to make clothes quickly and inexpensively, fast fashion companies in America exploit garment workers overseas, paying them as low as $1 to $3 a day.”  This is not only unfair but also unlawful. Because companies are not paying enough to employees, many are left in distress and debt leading to several suicides. Not only, but they are also accessing poisonous and unhealthy chemicals to keep up with the demand, which can affect the buyers and consumers. Furthermore, companies will waste instead of recycle since they are already benefiting enough resulting in overload land and fabric waste. In conclusion, this is an issue that is affecting employees across the globe and it is slowly causing more damage everyday.

AI generated Paragraph:

Fast fashion refers to the rapid production of inexpensive clothing that mimics current fashion trends. It has revolutionized the fashion industry, offering consumers affordable and trendy clothing options at a quick pace. However, behind its allure lies a plethora of environmental and ethical concerns. Fast fashion relies on cheap labor and unsustainable manufacturing processes, contributing to pollution, resource depletion, and exploitation of workers in developing countries. The constant turnover of styles encourages overconsumption and generates massive amounts of textile waste, further exacerbating environmental issues. Despite its convenience and affordability, the detrimental impacts of fast fashion underscore the need for a shift towards more sustainable and ethical practices in the fashion industry.

  • What was your experience in using AI? My experience using AI was very quick and easy. However, I realized that much of the information is written in complex vocabulary and is difficult to read. Even though I was given the answer in a matter of seconds I noticed that the language used was very complicated and hard to understand.
  • Was the paragraph the AI generated accurate? Fact-check any new information and see if it’s true. After fact-checking the new information, I have come to realization that it is accurate. AI generated information may be complex but it is correct.
  • Was the exercise useful? How can this help you with your learning going forward? This exercise was very useful in learning about the Artificial technology intelligence and its language and information. This can help me with my learning going forward by helping me double check my information and guide my research after fact checking.
  • Were your results expected? Yes or No? Explain. Yes, I was expecting AI to have accurate results. That is, I have heard a lot about its quick and precise intelligence from friends and the internet, so it was expected.

Hundreds of sea turtles found paralyzed on U.S. shores- Break the fake part II.

Is it true that hundreds of sea turtles were found paralyzed on U.S. shores? Could the mysterious, frigid, frozen waters of North Carolina really cause such dangerous conditions affecting aquatic life? Is it possible for these glacial, icy-cold temperatures to result in the death of 73 sea turtles? Well, this post made by “The News and Observer” found on X (Twitter) has left me eager to find out whether this is accurate or not. In order for me to find out, I had to take the following steps:

  1. Check if the site was reliable: While examining this post, I noticed that the blue check mark was absent, meaning that this site isn’t verified and is most likely an unreliable source, however I wanted to examine this further and look more closely into the organization. I noticed that they had more than 235 thousand followers not only, but  they have also been an online newspaper for about 17 years. I began to question and wanted more answers, such as: Do they come up on wikipedia or google? Do they have an online history? Are they who they say they are? So, I continued to search further.
  2. Searched Wikipedia: On Wikipedia I found that “The News and Observer” are a regional American Newspaper that serves in North Carolina. This led me to believe that this news was taken from its local newspaper. I have also found that “The News and observer” was first founded in 1865! It has been awarded three Pulitzer Prizes, and it is known as the largest in circulation in the state. This led me to believe that they are who they say they are, and they do have an online history found on Wikipedia. Before jumping into conclusion, I decided to approach this cautiously since it could still be misleading information.
  3. Used fact-checking tools: To make sure that the news were accurate, I used fact-checking tools. I searched on google using the word “hoax” in my sentence and investigated any websites that lead to this being fake. Unfortunately, I could only find websites leading to this being true.
  4. Checked other sources: I then, checked other sources to make sure that I was following the right path.

Lastly, I conclude that this news is indeed correct! After several verifications, I now know that this is in fact true.

Take your kid to work day!

On November the first, I got to experience going with my dad to his work place at stem cell technologies. My day started off with getting ready and taking the skytrain at about 6:00 am, then taking a bus and finally walking to the building. Once I arrived the team leaders gave us a presentation and a tour. They explained what the company does and why (such as cell separation, high quality cell culture media, and packaging). During this presentation we got to work hands on and create a safe yellow coloured liquid and package it ourselves. We had to wear full white gowns, gloves, goggles and other safety equipment, so that we seem professional. We also got to talk and connect with other students who were also there to see their parent’s workplace. I really enjoyed their explanations and instructions on everything. Then, we got to package it and label it. We learned about how precise we have to be and how every label has to have correct information, and how the lid should always be closed and with no bubbles or openings. After, we had our lunch break and then we had to take a public bus to the main building. There, we got to learn about their company’s photography. While exploring the photography of the company, we got taken to take our own photos for fun. From this we learned about how much images add to a company’s marketing. We also got to create colours and use the cell division machine. Lastly we went into a cell lab and learned all about the stem cells and how they get to decide what cell they will become. This day was very busy and tiring yet so fun! I got to experience new things, meet new people and learn a lot more about what my dad does everyday!

While I visited my dad’s workplace at StemCell technologies, I noticed that the environment is very organized. I noticed that everyone and everything had its own profession. I heard machines and lab work activities. I saw people working hard, machines moving, and experiments. I could smell chemicals and I could feel the hard work. During this time of me being around a workplace environment, I enjoyed exploring something different and learning how my dad does his job.

I think that the friendly and hard-working environment would encourage and motivate me to wake up every day to attend work. I really enjoyed how everyone was very companiable and I think that having a work environment like this motivates employees to go to work every day. This is because it helps energize the atmosphere and makes workers feel more confident and content.

I don’t think that anything about the work environment would make me feel discouraged from waking every day to attend work, however I think that this workplace doesn’t fit me due to my interests. I don’t think that I will be in the chemical branch but if I would then I would definitely choose StemCell.

One thing I found interesting at my workplace visit is how they package and label their items. I found the machines and their robots that do long and boring human jobs much faster and more efficiently. I enjoyed the tour and how friendly the employees were. Hopefully in the future, maybe I might get to visit StemCell Technologies again!
