In this post, I will be sharing my draft and final Coast Salish art pieces, along with my reflection about how my awareness of Coast Salish Art in our community has changed.
How has your awareness of Coast Salish Art in our community changed?
My awareness of Coast Salish art in our community has increased significantly after doing Coast Salish art. Prior to this project, I had basic knowledge about the symbolism of the different animals in Native storytelling. I did not realize that there was meaning to each and every symbol and shape. I now understand the meaning of the symbols used in their art and and how they are used to represent different things, such as the ovoid represents heads, bodies, joints, and eyes. I can now relate the symbols to their equivalent symbolic meaning in this form of art seen in our community. Using my newly acquired knowledge, I can enjoy Coast Salish art to the fullest, understand the deeper and more significant meaning, and participate in Coast Salish culture as well.
