• His class at the Springfield, Mass., Young Men’s Christian Association International Training School, where Almonte, Ont.-born James Naismith taught physical education, was unruly, and he decided he needed a game to distract them. He wanted an indoor sport that would be inexpensive and easy to understand but would not be too rough, for fear of injuries. The first game took place in December 1891. There were two teams of nine players, with Naismith as referee and Stebbins at the ready with a stepladder to fish the ball out of the basket after a goal. Naismith was kept busy by constant crowding and fouling. The janitor was not. The final score was 1-0. But the players were hooked. One of them came up with a name for the new game: “Naismith Ball.” Jim Naismith ridiculed that as being likely to ensure oblivion for his new sport. “Basketball” was the next suggestion. It stuck.

My ideas, questions, connections, etc. :

• The game was first named Naismith ball before it was called basketball.

Summary :

James Naismith, born on November 6th, 1861, started his adult life teaching a class at Springfield, the subject he taught was physical education. But one day, he decided that physical education wasn’t enough and wanted to invent a new game. He wanted to invent a sport that would not be expensive to create nor very harmful/able to cause injuries easily. In addition, he wanted a game that was simple to learn and understand. The first basketball game that ever took place was on December 1891, the teams were split into 2 and each team had 9 people, it was different back then. Naismith crowded and fouled the ball many times during the game and the final score, in the end, was 1-0. A fun fact is that the original name for basketball was “Naismith ball,” eventually Naismith changed it to the basketball that is the most commonly used.
