On take your kids to work day I went with my mom to her work. My mom works at Rogers arena and is a graphics artist. She creates graphics and then plays them in a live hockey game. We arrived to her work at around 1:00. At this time, I observed her testing and organizing all the ads for the hockey game. At around 300, we went down to the control room where they held a meeting discussing a run down of what will be shown during the hockey game and when everything happens. Next, we headed back upstairs where they did a rehearsal which showcased all the visuals, sounds, and lights. At 5:00 they held a dinner there which included all of the staff. Once we were done, we went back upstairs to wait until all of the people showed up for the hockey game. The hockey game started at 7:00, I stayed upstairs for the fist period and got to wear a headset and experience what goes on behind the scenes. Once the second period started, I went to the control room and got to see how the cameras work and even got to help write messages on the big screen. When the game was over, at around 9:30 we stayed a bit longer till 10:00 put away everything.

- What did you hear, see, smell, and feel in the work environment on Nov. 1st?
The environment was full of people that were attending the game as well as lots and lots of people working there behind the scenes. The atmosphere was very energetic and loud but behind the scenes it was very calm with orders to people coming through a headset. There were also a lot of devices such as TVs and cameras that were used not only in the control room but also in the stadium. Lastly, the atmosphere was packed with smells of ice and food from nearby vendors.
- What about the environment would motivate you to wake up every day to attend work?
For me, I would take an interest in participating in a job like this due to the interesting device work such as preparing videos/adds and giving orders to others. I also found it interesting that every day is different, meaning that you would work for different sports and would have new tasks to do each day (according to the sport).
- What about the work environment would discourage you from waking up every day to attend work?
I would find it hard to participate in a job that has a highly stressful environment. Because everything that you would control would be live and there is no room for mistakes. To do this job you would have to be able to multitask and be able to collaborate with your team, which I find are my least capable areas that I could improve in.
- What is ONE thing you found interesting about your workplace visit?
Through this experience I have gained knowledge about what goes on behind the scenes of any sport event and the work that gets put into it. Something that was shocking to see was how many people it takes to run a game and all of the small details that need to be perfect.
