How has your awareness of Coast Salish Art in our community changed? Be specific and give at least one example.
Although I was aware of Coast Salish influence in British Columbia, I did not know much about the art. I felt it was rewarding and fun to learn about Coast Salish art. Moreover, I found it interesting that we were primarily learning about art. Seeing Indigenous art, I thought it looked nice, but did not think much more of it. I had not realized that Indigenous art had more depth and meaning behind them. For example, I learned that the circles go where the large joints are. Another instance is that each shape has a different purpose and can be changed. In Coast Salish art, I appreciate that there is a system, yet a space for creativity for everyone. Finally, I think Coast Salish art is for everyone. Any person can learn and make Indigenous art which is an important part. People may misconceive Coast Salish art as an animal with shapes in them, but I think it has a uniqueness to it. I am more aware of the depth and creativity that Coast Salish art merits compared to my initial thoughts previous to this assignment.
