Core Competencies Assessment

In Entrepreneurship and Marketing 10, I have demonstrated creative thinking in our creating a campaign for a business assignment by generating ideas. I had to come up with an unique campaign for an already existing business, I used my creativity to generate unique ideas. I made a campaign that would be hosted on Instagram where people could win a prize and connect with others. I also demonstrated creative thinking in business 10 in my project to create a logo design for myself, I used my creative thinking to incorporate my initials in a pleasing design demonstrating that I can think “outside the box” to get innovative ideas and persevere to develop them.

I’ve improved my communication competency in Business 10, by asking my peers questions after their presentations this demonstrates connecting and engaging with others. I would communicate with them what I think they did well and also where they could improve, also asking questions about anything I had confusion about. Another way that I have worked on my communication competency in business 10 is consistently presenting and going in front of the class to explain my project. This demonstrates that I acquired, interpreted and presented information.

I demonstrated the communication skill during our literary circles in my French 10 class. I shared my ideas about the book with my classmates and participate in discussions. I collaborated with others and shared our opinions, continuing to respect each other even if our ideas were different. This shows that I can participate and collaborate with others in French.

I demonstrated personal responsible by practicing and studying my weakness in my French 10 class. In French my weakness is grammar and I improved my practicing a lot before tests and spending time studying. I improved my grammar by asking my teacher questions. I also used my strengths which are my oral French. I communicated with others and was confident during presentations. This shows that I know my forces and weaknesses in French and I am ready to work to improve them.

Core Competencies Assessment

In my English 9 course, we did an in-class write synthesis pa learning activity which was a great demonstration of the Thinking competency because it required me to think in depth of two different texts and then apply the concepts that I have learned into a paragraph. For this paragraph we were required to answer a question while comparing two different texts. This made me think in-depth about the question that was being asked of me and really think about the texts I read. It made me analyze the texts in-depth and helped me in learning how to apply concepts. While doing this assignment, I took the content of these texts and represented them in a different way and showed the similarities that weren’t clear before. I believe I demonstrated the thinking competency in this synthesis paragraph writing.

Ex:

I’ve grown the most in the communication competency because at the start of the semester I wouldn’t participate in class very much or communicate with others. I believe that I have improved from that, and I now participate and communicate with my peers. I try my best to participate in class discussions and to raise my hand if I have a question or know an answer to a question. I am now able to present information to my peers and communicate my ideas with them. I can participate well when we have discussions, and I am able to contribute my ideas.

Next, I will focus on developing this communication competency by participating more in class. I believe that I have made a lot of progress on this competency, but I have still had more room for improvement. I can work on this by participating more in class and not to be scared to share my ideas. I want to be able to share my ideas comfortably with my peers and be able to speak up in class. I want to focus on participating by sharing answers to the class and being more comfortable when asking questions.

Coast Salish Spirit Animal

My spirit animal is a dolphin.

The steps I took in choosing my spirit animal was first to start with the quiz that was in the packet that we were given. I did the survey and I knew already that I wanted something to do with a water animal since I like swimming. I got dolphin and I was pretty satisfied but I also wanted to check the other animals to see if one really stuck out to me. I checked the other animals and I was pretty happy with dolphin, so I stuck with that animal. I feel like the traits that I relate with for the dolphin is that I can have a lot of fun and really enjoy life. Also times that I am feeling down I feel like I am improving how I communicate in those situations. Also, I really love to swim and I love water and dolphins are a water species. I think this process helped me learn that I can communicate with others around me but I can improve on that skill. I also feel like this made me realize that I need to recognize the energy around me and also I feel like I do recognize what is going on around me.

Break the Fake – Did Amelia Earhart get eaten by crabs?

In this article, they talk about the way that Amelia Earhart could have died. They talk about things that could have happened, but they just assume instead of having proof.

  1. I found an article discussing that Amelia Earhart could have gotten eaten by crabs and the probability that she did. I did a background research if this is true.

2. I did a background research on the author. The author pretty authentic on their Twitter account and they had a decent amount of followers.

3. I did research on the Wikipedia page, but when I searched them up it took me to the page of the founder and CEO of Iflscience. I found out that they have been caught for fake news before and plagiarism from other articles as well. This makes this website untrustworthy.

4. I checked Snopes as well and didn’t find a specific article on the topic of her death. I did find an article talking about theories of her death. The article called the theories out for being fake and not true. They talked about how there isn’t any proof to back these theories up and most of the theories are very crazy.

5. Lastly, I also checked other sources but they were mostly theories and had no real proof to back up the claims they were making. Which proves that this is fake news.

Take your kids to work day

On November 1st, I attended my dad’s workplace. I went to Seaspan, specifically to their shipyards in North Vancouver. During the day I attended different meetings with my dad. He had several meetings with his boss and a meeting with the vice-president of the North Vancouver shipyards. These first couple of meetings weren’t at the building where my dad’s office is located. They were in different meeting rooms that were outside of the shipyard. The meetings weren’t that interesting since I didn’t always know what they were discussing. Most of the meetings were about a problem they have to solve and what they can change to solve the problem. Around 12:30, we had lunch and there was a little break until my dad’s next meeting. After that meeting, my dad took me on one of the ships that they are building which was very interesting to see. When we were done seeing the ship, I finally got to see my dad’s office. This office was on the shipyard and my dad showed me different models of the ship. It was very interesting and I attended one more meeting with him. After that he had to send some emails and then we left.

This is a picture of my dad’s office:

  1. What did you hear, see, smell, and feel in the work environment on Nov. 1st?

When I first arrived at the workplace, I saw many different buildings.  There are buildings that are meant for many different people. Before I started work with my dad, there was a meeting with all the grade 9s who were there. The meeting was in the training room, and it was very nice. I met the vice-president, and he was really nice. After the meeting we met back with our parents. My dad’s office is on the shipyard, so we had to walk on a designated path because we weren’t wearing safety gear. When we were walking on the path there were a lot of random metal things around and a lot of buildings. There was a lot of noise going on like drilling and sounds of cutting metal. A lot of people were wearing high-vise vests, hard hats and safety glasses. When we entered my dad’s building it was way quieter, and the building was pretty nice. There were a lot of desks and cubicles for people to sit at. There were a lot of people sitting at desks and my dad introduced me to some of the people who work for him. My dad took me on a ship that they are working on. I had to wear all the safety gear and there were a lot of stairs I had to climb up. The ship was really big, and it wasn’t even finished yet. The view from the ship was really nice and the people from below looked really big. Back at my dad’s office he had a couple of meetings which I sat through with him. It was interesting to listen to them talk about how to solve problems going on.

  1. What about the environment would motivate you to wake up every day to attend work?

The environment was very friendly, and everyone was very respectful. Everyone was nice to each other and before the meetings they all talked to each other in a friendly way before getting to business. They also respected each other during the meetings, and I think that’s very important. Even if they didn’t agree on something they didn’t become angry, they found a way to compromise or listened to and tried to understand what the other person wanted. I think that it’s good that you can joke around sometimes and have fun and the people were able to do that and keep things serious at the same time. I don’t want to always have to be serious all the time so it’s nice to have an environment that can also be relaxed at times.

  1. What about the work environment would discourage you from waking up every day to attend work?

The work environment was a bit boring. I don’t like sitting around all the time and sitting around at a computer all the time. Sometimes my dad can be in 90-minute meetings and that’s not really something that I like. I don’t like sitting around and it makes me tired sitting around and listening to people talk. He also has to sit at a computer and work all the time and after a while I would get tired if I didn’t get up and walk around. The environment outside was also really loud. There’s a lot going on, but mostly I would be nervous if the construction workers accidentally messed up and I got hurt. I mostly didn’t like that most of the time they can mess up something and then my dad has to go in with his team and fix it. I would be pretty annoyed if they messed up something simple and I had to spend hours trying to figure out how to fix it.

  1. What is ONE thing you found interesting about your workplace visit?

One thing I found interesting about the workplace I visited is the amount of effort that goes into building a ship. Before, I didn’t think that it was that hard and you just nail a couple things together and you’re done. But there’s much more thought that goes into it than I thought. For example, I got to see a model of piping for the fire system that was being done. There was more than 2 kilometers of piping for this fire system and that was only 1 out of 3 systems. I didn’t think it was that complex and we didn’t need all of that. It also takes a lot time for the construction and design. The construction is in 2018 and they still have a long way to go. For me, I thought before that it would already be over but now, I understand how it works. I found it really interesting how much time is devoted to these ships and how long it takes to build them.
