Q & A

What is the overall topic and the goal of your project?

The overall topic of my project was talking about the effects of Covid-19 on our mental health, and how it affected different genders and ages. The goal of my project was to inform people that if they struggled with their mental health during the pandemic that they were not alone. I wanted to share

What sites did you use to collect your data and create the infographic and what did you learn about it?

The site I used to collect my data was StatsCan https://www.statcan.gc.ca/en/start and the Government of Canada https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/publications/diseases-conditions/infographic-mental-health-second-wave-covid-19-pandemic.html. For my infographic I used Canva. StatsCan demonstrated many informational graphs which helped me a lot. At first it was a bit hard to find the correct information. Eventually I figured it out and it was easy to search for it. The government of Canada talked a lot about the mental health of Canadians during the pandemic which helped me understand how their mental health was overall. These two databases helped me a lot with the information for my infographic.

How has the process of utilizing these sites impacted your understanding of how technology can change (or help) the world?

I find the technology of StatsCan to be quite interesting. They take surveys from Canadians and document them. For the future with education and if there is ever a history class on Covid-19 this can be especially useful for teachers to explain with percentages. For general research I recommend more simple sites like the Government of Canada which talks about more than just graphs.

The history of the famous Nanaimo bar – Information Fluency

The history of the famous Nanaimo bar – Information Fluency

Like many people one of my passions is baking and one of my favourite no bake desserts is the Nanaimo Bar. The Nanaimo bar is well known to many Canadians as it was founded in Nanaimo, British Columbia. But not many people know the history behind it or how it became popularized throughout Canada.

This dessert was invented in Nanaimo, British Columbia, and it was popularized following the years of WWII. Who invented the Nanaimo bar? No one truly knows who invented the Nanaimo bar, but from an article posted by CBC News Lenore Newman claimed,It can be traced back to three women in Nanaimo after the Second World War.” But how did it become more well-known? It became well known when Expo 86 came to Vancouver, BC. What is Expo 86? On May 2, 1986, Expo 86 came to Vancouver, BC. It was opened by the Prince and Princess of Wales and then closed on October 13, 1986. From that event alone there were 20 111 578 visits. At this event, there were rides, games, and most importantly food. On food, Expo 86 was why the Nanaimo bar became popularized in the country. The Nanaimo bar first rose to the popularity of a woman named Susan Mendelson. She sold the confection during the 1970s so she could help pay her tuition. What did Susan do after selling the bar? In 1979 Susan opened The Lazy Gourmet in Vancouver, BC. It was also one of the first places to sell this sweet confection. The Nanaimo bar beat out many popular confections such as Tims Hortons Iced Capp, Beaver Tails, and many more. But how? The National Post took a poll from Canadians in 2006, which then declared that the Nanaimo bar was Canada’s favourite confection.

If you are interested in making this dessert, the Canadian Encyclopedia attached a video from the Great Canadian Baking show on how to create the Nanaimo Bar:

Break the Fake – Biggest Gymnastic Fail Ever

Break the Fake – Biggest Gymnastic Fail Ever

I was scrolling through YouTube when this video came up. It said Gymnastic Accident. There wasn’t much context, but I was curious to see what it was so I decided to check it out. The video showed a gymnast running to do his vault but when he jumped on the springboard it broke and he flew into the judges table. Skeptical whether it was real or fake, I decided to research more about the video. Below here is a picture from the video

Since the person who posted the video was not the original source, I decided to search the video up on google.

After doing some research on google there was another YouTube video called BIGGEST GYMNASTIC FAIL EVER – real or fake? Since it had the words real or fake I decided to check it out to see whether it was, real or fake? The guy from billschannel was pointing out the description the background and the motion of the gymnast to find out if its real or fake. He went on a fact checking site showing that the video was an advertisement for craftsman tools.

Then I did a Wikipedia search to see if there was more information about the video. Unfortunately, there wasn’t any results with my search.

The description in the original video seemed real, but it was also fake since that incident didn’t happen and the video was an advertisement. So in the end the video was obviously fake.

TOKTWD

TOKTWD

Hello everyone! My dad runs a royalty company based in the mining industry. So for TOKTWD, today I went to my dads office in Downtown, Vancouver.

What we did

Once I arrived to the office I got myself set up at the desk. Around 9 we had a online meeting that was finding a strategy or thinking how they can buy a mineral project in Nevada. Around 10-10:30 we had another meeting about selling a copper and gold project in British Columbia to another exploration company. Once the meeting was finished I went back and did more work. At around 11:30 me and my dad walked to Miku for lunch. After lunch I did more work and at 2 we had a third meeting that was a strategy and planning session to look for copper, rare earth elements, and gold in Mexico for 2023.

The work environment

The work environment was nice and quiet and there really isn’t any distinctive smell. In the morning people would say hello to each other, and ask how they’re doing. It’s not loud or noisy but sometimes there would be people chatting to each other for a bit, like asking questions, or you would hear people on an online meeting. There are two private rooms for meetings and presentations, in the main area there are 5 desks and a small kitchen. On every desk there are two monitors, that hook up to your laptop. In the two private rooms there is one big table, 8 chairs and a tv.

Would the work environment motivate me to go to work?

Yes. since it’s quiet in there, I can focus easily and do my work. I feel like I would be motivated to wake up everyday to go there, because everyone is friendly and they don’t disturb you. I’m not working in a cubicle so I don’t feel so enclosed. You can see a view of the waterfront area in Vancouver, so it’s nice to take a small break from what you are doing and enjoy the view.
