Appropriate Comments

Non-negativity

I’m not saying all comments must be positive, but they shouldn’t contain negativity. If you see something you disagree with then instead of flaming it in the comments, give feedback on what I should have done differently.

The ‘right’ length

What I mean by this is comments shouldn’t always be one or two words, but it shouldn’t be pages either. In most cases points can be conveyed in a few sentences whether its feedback or a compliment. What I’ve found is that some people avoid reading comments which are too lengthy. In my opinion there isn’t a specific number of words which is an ideal comment length as it may vary per topic.

Purpose

Please don’t comment things which have no inherent purpose. What I mean by this is have a reason behind your comment. Are you giving feedback, a compliment, or just giving your thoughts on a topic? Don’t waste your time writing or the readers time on something irrelevant.

Respect

People have varying opinions on different topics based off their experiences in life. Accept what other people have to say as their personal beliefs and respect them. This by no means means you need to agree with them.

Examples of a Good Comment:

An example of good comments would be, “I personally disagree with keeping comments concise. The quality of a comment increases the longer it is. By trying to keep a comment concise you lose crucial information.”

I consider this a good comment because although its directly giving feedback on comment length, it is still concise. It respectively and non-negatively delivered feedback which was the purpose of the comment.
