Summary

          Anxiety disorders are classified into six different types. These anxiety disorders include phobias, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. While all six of these mental illnesses are categorized under the general name of anxiety, they all differ in one way or another. People with anxiety disorders experience physical, social, and mental side effects. A number of these side effects include isolating yourself from others and a social life, insomnia, weight fluctuation, and extreme mood changes. Roughly 36% of people around the world are affected by this mental illness: however, only 30% of people struggling are receiving treatment. In the past, if you had anxiety, you would keep it to yourself, almost as if it was something to hide and be ashamed of. Nowadays, it is a more normalized topic due to the surge in cases due to COVID-19. When people lost their jobs, were isolated from friends and family, lost lives and had to do everything from home, it took a huge toll on mental health as a global community. When we were in this dark time together, mental health numbers hit a high, and not only in adults. Anxiety in adolescence is at a high currently, teenagers often feel oversensitive and lack self- confidence as they come to term with the changes their going through. Growing up with anxiety while watching yourself change is a painful process for the individual and their loved ones. These two articles informed me greatly about the up surge in anxiety cases in recent years, and how to help individuals struggling. In conclusion, anxiety disorders are unpleasant reminders that you are unsafe at any time of day for no exact reason.
