Core Competency (grade 10)

This year, I have worked hard to improve my communication skills, especially in English. One of the biggest things that helped me was taking drama class. In drama, I had to perform, speak in front of others, and work with my classmates to create scenes and plays. This helped me feel more confident about speaking and taught me how to express myself more clearly. It also gave me the chance to practice using my voice and body language to connect with others, which is a skill I can use in many other areas.

My English writing skills have also improved a lot compared to last year. I have learned how to organize my ideas better and use proper grammar and punctuation in my writing. Whether I am authoring an essay, a creative story, or even just reflecting on something, I feel like my writing has become clearer and more interesting to read. I have also worked on adding more detail and creativity to my writing, which has made a significant difference.

Overall, this year has been a big step forward for me in terms of communication. Drama class has helped me grow as a speaker, while my writing skills have become stronger. These improvements have made me feel more confident in my ability to share my thoughts and ideas, both in school and in everyday life. I am proud of how far I have come and hop to see more improvements throughout the year.

Core Competencies

Communications, Connect and Engage.

This year, I have significantly improved my communication skills, writing, and teamwork in class. By participating in class presentations and talking to my classmates, I have learned to express myself clearly and confidentially, which enhanced my communication skills. I improved my speaking skills by talking to my friends and having lunch together. I have also joined multiple clubs at school. Going to clubs after school allows me to talk to new people from different grades. Through class-in-writes, practicing, and feedback from my English teacher, my writing skills have enhanced, allowing me to make well-structured and coherent paragraphs in class. I try to edit my paragraphs and ask my teacher to help make them proficient. Group projects in class made me improve my teamwork as well as my English-speaking skills. The group projects allowed me to express my ideas clearly, understand other people’s perspectives, and work harmonizingly with everyone. I ask my group members to contribute their ideas and try to compare our ideas together for a better understanding of what we are thinking. Also, for club activities, I try to help at the bake sales that we have. Since I have joined the archery club, I try to stay behind and help clean up afterward. Even though I have a lot to improve in myself I am confident in what I have achieved this year. These improvements have bolstered my academic performance and prepared me for future challenges in the school year.

Coast Salish Art

Coast Salish Art.  Animal used:Wolf

Coast Salish art is an art unique to the Pacific Northwest Coast among the Salish peoples. This art represents the display of supernatural spirit powers acquired by the owner. The symbols that are mainly used to make this art are circles or ovals, trigons, crescents, and extended crescents.

How has your awareness of Coast Salish Art in our community changed?

At first when I first saw Coast Salish art, I thought that it was random outlines of animals filled with random shapes. But in this assignment I learnt that every animal has its own symbol and meanings, I also found out that the unique shapes also have their own meanings hidden inside them. For example, A circle represents the heart of the animal, but it can also represent the joints.

What was your experience in using Ai?

I learned many innovative ideas from using AI generated paragraphs although most of the ideas were repeated. One thing I realized while doing this assignment is that you can easily tell whether the paragraph was written by a person or by using AI, another thing i noticed was that Ai uses advanced writing vocabulary words.

Was the paragraph the AI generated accurate? Fact-check any current information and see if it is true.

The AI paragraph had similar ideas with the paragraph that I wrote, the information was correct and did not have any misinformation. Even though the AI paragraph was like the one I wrote, Ai does not always have the correct information.

Was the exercise useful? How can this help you with your learning going forward?

Yes, this exercise was helpful to me. I could use this in the future if needed to get inspiration for creative writing. Although everything that AI writes may not be true, it can be helpful with getting ideas and it can be a great tool to help with learning.

The results exceeded my expectations, when I first skimmed through the paragraph I was impressed with the word choices that were used but later when i was thoroughly reading the paragraph, it was remarkably like the one I had written.

Were your results expected? Yes or No? Explain.

Take our kids to work day! (TOKTWD)

Hello! My name is Kartar Kalsi, and here I am going to share my experience on November 1st to take our kids to work day! So, on TOKTWD (Take Our Kid to Work Day) I went to a Vegan bakery that my mother works in. It is located in Nanaimo St, Vancouver, BC. it is called To Live for Bakery. In this bakery they have distinct types of pastries; like, cake, croissants, cookies, bread, Nanaimo bars, cake-pops, soft serve, and many others. You could pair a cup of coffee with some pastries from the bakery, they have a variety of coffee for you to choose from, but if you do not drink coffee do not worry, they have cold pressed juice for you to choose from. On this day i had a wonderful experience about what work you can do in a bakery.I noticed that people were lining up to get stuff from the bakery the lines were very long, they would wait in line for a long time just to get some pastries or cakes. So that made me realise no matter how good something is you will have to wait for it to slowly approach you, example getting good scores, you have to study hard to get good grades you cant just not study at all and expect to pass like wonders, Unless your very very very very  smart.

First of all I was provided with the information and was shown all the utensils used in the kitchen as well as the big oven where the bakers bake.

The kitchen was very well maintained and hygienic, all bakers wore gloves and hats to maintain proper hygiene. Later, I helped my mother bake cakes and clean up, including the dishes. Her coworkers and the owner were all exceedingly kind and friendly. I indeed had a wonderful time.

  1. What did you hear, see, smell, and feel in the work environment on Nov. 1st?

When I entered the bakery the smell of pumpkin spice mixed with coffee was flying around me which was then interrupted by the sound of the coffee machine, the barista was making some coffee for a customer. I then saw some cookies and other pastries on display at the counter, I wanted to have them all one by one.

2. What about the environment would motivate you to wake up everyday to attend work

The work environment was very lovely, the staff and owner were all exceedingly kind and friendly, there was music playing in the background and everyone was having fun singing along. No one ignored someone when they needed a hand with help, they were indeed kind and helpful.

3.What about the work environment would discourage you from waking up every day to attend work?

I do not think it would discourage anyone for going to work, they even have free candy for the staffs

4.What is ONE thing you found interesting about your workplace visit?

Different people from different countries were working together in one place filled with laugh. And you know there is this saying ‘Bakers make the world smell better’
