I went to the town center fire hall with my dad. It was very fun and educational. I got to learn how to prevent fire, what to do in case if a fire, how to use a fire extinguisher and the different types, we learned how to put on a breathing apparatus and what to do if we were opening a hot door. We also were shown what firefighters do to put out a fire and save a person in danger.
1. What did you hear, see, smell, and feel in the work environment on Nov. 6th? Use details
I heard people yelling, sirens, and firetrucks. I saw firefighters putting out a fire, how to use a fire extinguisher, learned how to use a breathing apparatus, and smoke house search. I smelled truck exhaust, cleaning products and smoke. I felt the weight of the breathing apparatus, the firefighting gear and getting sprayed by a hose.
2. What about the environment would motivate you to wake up every day to attend work? Why?
I feel like I would consider a job as a firefighter because you go to the fire hall. Not knowing what you’re going to do everyday. It could be something different. It could be a car crash, a house fire or helping and old lady get out of bed. It seems like you create such a family because you’re around the same people so much and I feel like I could create real bonds going to a job like that everyday.
3. What about the work environment would discourage you from waking up every day to attend work? Why?
I feel like I would be discouraged because it is such a mentally tough job and it is hard when you have to see things that you aren’t ready for. It is also a physically demanding job because you need to be strong and have good teamwork even if you have a night shift and you’re out of call, you still need to be nice and positive.
4. What is ONE thing you found interesting about your workplace visit? Why?
- The thing I found interesting about the workplace is when firefighters have to walk into a blackout smoke room and have to trace the room to have to create a picture in your mind to try and get to the next room to either put out the fire or save someone. The ability to navigate the room it is a zero visibility.
