So far this semester in my careers class, one of the assignments we have received is to make an example resume and cover letter if we were in our twenties. By doing so, I practiced critical thinking by researching the necessary information to write on both papers. I looked at many different examples and analyzed them to find pieces that I could use for mine in addition to phrases and topics brought up in them. I then designed the resume structure I would use and transferred the information onto their making sure that everything stayed neat and clean. After completing them, our class was organized into small groups of two to three and we acted out a fake interview, practicing our communication by connecting and engaging with others.
I think I did well in how I created the structure and the fact that it’s organized and could have been read quickly in the case an actual employer was to look through it as well as during the part where we acted out the interview. Since I don’t usually like or practice communication with others too much, especially with others I don’t know as well, I made sure to practice a lot, so I’d be prepared and I’m happy that my efforts paid off and that I was well prepared when I presented.
In my math class, I also showed critical thinking and communication in the analyzation and presenting of questions such as in our assigned homework, quizzes, and tests. Another area I showed this was in our journal assignments, which we had to complete each unit we completed. Through that assignment, I was able to show communication by explaining and recounting what we did in that unit, what I found difficult and easy, as well as what I learned.
This year, my goal is to try and volunteer more in class, whether that be to answer questions even if I’m uncertain about whether I have the correct answers or other social interactions since, if possible, I often opt out. By trying to do so, I could improve my communication skills to talk more comfortably with others even if we aren’t as close.
