Core Competencies

Communication:

In my Communications 9 class, I learned how to acquire, interpret, and present information to my classmates. For example, throughout many skits, I learned how to engage in conversation in preparing for the play. Since my teacher set a short time limit for the preparation, I had to use the time very wisely and productively by collaborating with others and making the script using various French expressions and challenging vocabulary. Not only expressing my opinions, but I also had to consider listening to others’ points of view and ideas to make quick decisions. Moreover, the division of tasks rolled as an important factor in our communication because we discussed what role each of us would play until all of us compromised and were satisfied.

Creative Thinking:

In my Communications 9 class, I learned how to generate and develop my ideas. The project ‘Pecha Kucha’ was an excellent example of creative thinking since it required me to create a story that was inspired by the theme of French fables. By reading numerous fables for this project, I was able to awaken my creativity and create a story using my unique literary voice. Choosing the setting, protagonist and antagonist, theme, and more, took quite a while, for I had to make multiple revisions and edits until I was finally satisfied.  Because of the time limit for this project, I had to simplify the story, yet keep it intriguing for others. As a result, I received a high mark on this project which I am still proud of.

Coast Salish Art

Thinking about creating this piece of digital art and the Edublog posts, how have your digital knowledge and skills improved this year? Be specific and give at least one example.

Through many projects in Digital Learning 9 class, I have made significant improvements in my digital knowledge and skills this year. This year, Break the Fake was my most impressive project, as it tough me how to recognize fake news in the media. This project helped a lot in learning how to use various tools to check the facts. For example, the website that helped me a lot in doing research was Snopes.com, which tells whether a fact is true or not. This enabled me to identify and reject false information among the countless pieces of content currently being shared on social media.

Information Fluency Paragraph

My Paragraph

The topic that I chose was global warming. In the notes, I mainly stated what the phenomena caused by climate change were and what the solutions were in order to prevent a crisis. According to the article, between 1979 and 2020, the occurrence of severe turbulence increased by 55% because of the extreme temperature contrast. Moreover, I learned that the Amazon, which plays a crucial role in storing carbon dioxide, faced a severe drought. Not only the negative phenomena of global warming, but I came across some interesting facts about utilizing AI technology to prevent wildfires. This method of using AI sensors, which distinguishes between the scent of a forest on fire and other common forest scents, can prevent forest fires from growing large enough to be detected by space satellites and preventing air pollution.

AI-Generated Paragraph

Global warming, a consequence of increased greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere, has led to significant climatic shifts and extreme weather events worldwide. One of the notable phenomena attributed to climate change is the severe drought in the Amazon rainforest, often referred to as the “lungs of the Earth,” which has not only led to a drastic reduction in biodiversity but also compromised its ability to act as a carbon sink. Another impact of global warming is the increased turbulence along the North Atlantic flight route, posing risks to air travel safety and efficiency due to the strengthening of high-altitude winds. To combat these challenges, innovative solutions have been proposed and implemented. Among these, the development of AI-enabled sensors capable of detecting the health of wild forests by their unique scent profiles stands out. This technology offers a novel way to monitor ecosystem health in real-time, enabling early detection of changes that could indicate drought or degradation, thereby facilitating timely intervention to prevent a crisis.
Q1. What was your experience in using AI?
I found it very effective and helpful because it took me less than a minute to write the entire paragraph.
Q2. Was the paragraph the AI generated accurate? Fact-check any new information and see if it’s true.
The paragraph was very accurate, and I could not find any false or unreliable information in this paragraph.
Q3. Was the exercise useful? How can this help you with your learning going forward?
Yes, it was very useful. I think that it will help me provide pratical information on my research while saving time at the same time.
Q4. Were your results expected? Yes or No? Explain.
Yes, the results were what I expected because I knew that AI could write very accurate information in a short amount of time with rich vocabulary.

Break the Fake Pt. 2 – Spiraling Village in Iran

While scrolling on X (formerly Twitter) , I found this picture showing Spiraling Village in Iran. I couldn’t really tell if this was true or false, so I decided to fact-check it.

STEP 1:

I started off by founding the original source of this picture on Instagram. The user had a blue checkmark, but since checkmarks can now be purchased, this doesn’t necessarily mean that is true.

STEP 2:

Next, I used Snopes.com to check if this picture was real or not and found out that it was fake and was actually AI-generated.

STEP 3:

Just to make sure, I double-checked by searching “Spiraling Village in Iran” on Google and Wikipedia, but I couldn’t find any other reliable sources that could confirm that it was fake.

In conclusion, I now know that this picture showing Spiraling Village in Iran is fake thanks to the search using fact-checking tools.

Take Our Kids to Work Day

On Take Our Kids Work Day, November 1st, I went to an organic tea room, called 8 corners with my friend’s mom. I took me 40 minutes to get there. When I got there, I started off by cleaning the washroom and sweeping the floor. And then, I helped with doing the dishes and cleaning the tables. At the end of the day, I helped to prepare for the upcoming Christmas festival event.

1. What did you hear, see, smell, and feel in the work environment on Nov. 1st?

In my work environment, I could hear dishes, people talking, I could see people gathering and talking, a busy kitchen, and the nature outside the window. I could smell pizza and all sorts of desserts being baked and tea being made. Even in a busy situation, I felt calm and healed thanks to the nature and fresh air surrounding me.

2. What about the environment would motivate you to wake up every day to attend work?

The fresh air of the deep forest and beautiful views of the mountains beyond the coast will motivate me to get up every morning and go to work.

3. What about the work environment would discourage you from waking up every day to attend work?

Because the location is deep in the forest, along a narrow road, with no public transportation and is 40 minutes away by car from my residence, it would be difficult to wake up every morning and attend work on time.

4. What is ONE thing you found interesting about your workplace visit?

One interesting thing is that all the food, from sourdough sandwiches to green tea, is made with organic ingredients. I thought this was a place that not only considers the taste and visual beauty, but also the health of its customers through the freshness and nutrition of the ingredients.
