TOKTWD (Take your kids to work day)

Summary: The work experience wasn’t too bad itself. I actually remembered the PLU codes (Price look up codes) pretty easily. Although I had a bit of trouble hearing the customer every time I asked for their membership details. Surprisingly, I had a bit of fun scanning the items and inputting plu codes. Most of the customers were really nice and friendly.

  1. What did you hear, see, smell, and feel in the work environment on Nov. 6th? Use details

I heard music from the speakers, beeping sounds of the cash register, the sounds of shopping carts and baskets, the sounds of people coming in and out and the voices of people on the intercom and people chatting. I see lots of produce and grocery items, the buttons on the cash register, paper with PLU codes and people coming in and out of the store. I could smell the earthy smell of the vegetables and the sweet smell of fruits. There was also strong perfume that lingered in the air. The rubber smell of the belt at checkout. I could feel the cold contrasting with the warmth of wearing five layers of clothing. I could also feel the smooth feeling of the paper, rough textures of some vegetables and the cold air from the freezers.

  1. What about the environment would motivate you to wake up every day to attend work? Why?

Something that would motivate me to come back is the music they play on the speakers throughout the store. It’s usually smooth jazz or the popular hit songs. The co workers there are also really nice, they helped me with a few things I struggled a bit with. I’m also familiar with a few customers that were shopping.

  1. What about the work environment would discourage you from waking up every day to attend work? Why?

Most likely the temperature. Even though I wore five layers of clothing, I could still feel the cold biting at my skin.

  1. What is ONE thing you found interesting about your workplace visit? Why?

Something I found interesting is the bottle refund system. You can bring glass milk jars for bottle refund. Another thing I found interesting was the functions on the cash register.
