Physics 12 Research Project Reflection: The Physics of a Hockey Shot

Why I chose this topic

I chose this topic because hockey has been my favourite sport for almost my whole life so I wanted to learn the physics behind a hockey shot. I also thought that maybe I could uncover something that I could keep in mind to make my shot better. It was interesting for me to discover that flex is much more important for a hockey shot than I would have thought. I used to think that most of the power just comes from your stick pushing against the puck but now I know that a big majority of the power comes from the elastic force the stick gains when a player flexes the stick.

Core Competencies

I demonstrated communication by clearly explaining the physics behind hockey shots using visuals, examples, and formulas. I broke down complex ideas like kinetic energy, flex, and momentum into simple steps so they were easy to understand. I also used a real life video to show how the stick flexes which helped visually communicate what I was talking about.

I showed creative thinking by connecting physics concepts to something I care about hockey. I showed creative thinking by using comparisons like a hockey stick being like a bow and arrow to explain flex and elastic energy. I also came up with my own examples and numbers to show how the math works.

Core Competencies Reflection Semester 2 2025

In English 12, I created a video project on logical fallacies that showcased my creative thinking skills. I produced a mock infomercial where I intentionally used logical fallacies to sell a fictional product. This approach allowed me to present complex concepts in an engaging and humorous way, demonstrating my ability to think outside the box and communicate ideas creatively.

In foods 12 course we did lots of cooking labs where I had to demonstrate the communication core competencies in order for me and my group to collaborate effectively . I consistently demonstrated effective communication by collaborating with my group, actively listening, sharing ideas, and coordinating tasks. My ability to build positive relationships with group members helped us work efficiently and achieve our goals together.

Self-Reflection Grade 11

Communication

In French, I did a podcast, which was an excellent example of communication because I had to explain, recount, reflect, connect, review, collaborate, interpret and present with my peers in French.

Creative Thinking

In Socials, I did a project, which was an excellent example of creative thinking because I demonstrated that I can generate and develop ideas outside the box on how to make the project creative so that it is not boring.

Critical Thinking

In Chemistry, I did labs, which was an excellent example of critical thinking because I demonstrated that I can analyze, critique, question, investigate and observe to draw conclusions and make judgments.

Personal Awareness and Responsibility

In Strength and Conditioning, I did weightlifting which was an excellent example of personal awareness and responsibility because weightlifting brings me joy and satisfaction. I recognize that it plays a role in my well-being. I also identified my strengths and limits and found internal motivation. I acted on opportunities for self-growth.
