This year I have exercised the core competency of critical thinking throughout contemplating the reason why. I used to just go along with the lessons I learned without really looking into it because I thought it did not matter. However, I realized that questioning why helps you understand, and it has helped me learn more and understand lessons. This is something that happens in classes such as my Physics 11 class, where I only understand a lesson when I question why and how. I now really look into the lesson and concepts and assess them. I will continue to ask why and how when doing anything, as it will sharpen the skill and allow for deeper analysis. I also practice this core competency by thinking for myself and the future. I considered the possible futures I could take and decided on a path that I think I would enjoy. I used my critical thinking skills to analyze research on the path and make judgments of my skills needed.

In science, I demonstrated the communication core competency through my roller coaster project. Me and my team used cardboard and hot glue to create a working roller coaster for a marble to roll down. I was effective with my words to make a well organized schedule to complete the coaster on time. When we encountered a conflict, I listened to each member’s opinions and followed through with an agreement in the middle. Everyone’s ideas were heard and considered and I let them know the final result of judgement. In the end, we were able to communicate to create a nice working roller coaster.

I believe communication is a prime fundamental that everyone must be able to achieve. So many jobs and activities require group effort, and if you cannot use effective communication then you will not be fit for the role. When I collaborate with others, I feel a weight lifted off my back. I do not need to worry about falling back, because I know that my team can catch me. That is one of the best things about having good communication. My goal is to become a leader who can help others who do not communicate learn too. As someone who wants to be a leader, I also show good listening skills. In the project, I heard many suggestions and considered all of them.
