Core Competencies Assignment 2024

One of my core competencies is the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with my peers. I’ve consistently demonstrated this skill across all my classes, including Chemistry 12, English 12, and Perspectives Globales 12, in various ways. In Chemistry, I worked closely with lab partners during experiments and group reviews, requiring clear and efficient communication. In English 12 and Perspectives Globales 12, discussions were a central part of the learning process, where I actively engaged by drawing connections between my peers’ opinions and questions to foster meaningful conversations.

My second core competency is my continuous immersion in French culture, which has greatly influenced my identity. In Perspectives Globales 12, I’ve explored this through reading news articles, participating in discussions, and watching French films. Beyond the classroom, I’ve engaged with French media by listening to songs and chatting with friends. This immersion has significantly enhanced both my French vocabulary and conversational fluency.

My third core competency is the significant improvement of my critical and reflective thinking skills. In Chemistry 12, I’ve deepened my understanding by learning new concepts and rules, while in English 12, I’ve reflected on the lessons and themes derived from various literary works. I often find myself thoughtfully considering what I’m learning and how it connects to the bigger picture. Additionally, the challenging content in Chemistry 12 has taught me new strategies for understanding and applying concepts, enhancing my observation skills both in and out of the classroom. This growth has enabled me to approach life from a broader range of perspectives.

Core Competencies Self-Assessment

Collaborating

My academic behavior used to be best described as profile 3 from the collaborating competency. This is because in the first semester, the few projects that I had, both mainly in social studies, and biology, mainly entailed me following the layout/plan that my other group members had created to complete the project. However, I’ve found that this semester, I’ve shown a lot more autonomy and responsibility in formulating how to collaborate with my peers in class effectively.  An example of this is the 4-month-long inquiry project, where we were tasked with conducting research, experimenting, interpreting results, and more. Throughout this process, another group member and I had been putting more effort into keeping our project on track. Which ultimately ended with the project being completed well and on time.

Critical Thinking and Reflective Thinking

This second semester, I have been taking both Physics and Pre-calculus 12. Throughout the semester, I would say that I have seen significant growth in my abilities to critically think and reflect on how math is used in real life. Whether this had been the Doppler effect, and how when I hear an ambulance coming towards me, the sounds seem different, or how logs are used to determine pH levels, how old materials, etc. Because of all these concepts and ideas, I’ve learned over the semester, I’d argue I’ve gone from profile 3 to profile 4 or even 5.

Science 9 – Human Space Exploration

In science 9, we had to build a thorough proposal for the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program. The SSEP basically just being a program where one experiment multiple schools around Canada and the United States are chosen to be launched into space to run experiments in a microgravitational environment.

Similar to the proposals created throughout this unit, we were also tasked in making a short PowerPoint sharing some key events/discoveries made or to be made in past, present and future space exploration. An example being when Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon, or when the ISS/International Space Station was launched into space.

This is the project that I made along with one of my fellow classmates, Jamie Lee. I am really proud of it because we covered some important events through a brief description per event. The final product being quite proficient and I believe that Jamie and myself have done a great job at researching, noting and generally learning.
