Core Competencies – My Capstone Project

For my capstone project, I am doing a mini teaching experience inspired by my previous tutoring position. I will essentially teach a student an entire course. The difference between this and tutoring is that I am not just helping a student alongside a separate course, I am actually creating structured lesson plans and delivering clear explanations of the topics myself. We go through example questions together so they can see how to solve problems step by step, and I assign homework to help them practice what they’ve learned. I even give quizzes to test their understanding. Overall, I have helped the student learn new concepts while also gaining essential skills along the way.

Participating in this project has significantly improved my communication skills. It requires me to be able to explain ideas clearly and concisely. I also practice listening to my student’s questions and adjusting the teaching as necessary to fit their needs. Additionally, I have developed my abilities to give feedback and be more confident in sharing information.

I have also improved my creative thinking in several ways. First of all, creating lesson plans and finding engaging ways to explain concepts requires me to think outside the box and come up with innovative teaching methods. It is extremely important to me to adapt my lessons based on my student’s feedback and learning style, which requires a lot of creative thinking.
