Core competencies

For my competency, I would like to talk about creative thinking. I believe I have shown this aspect across many of my class and in my free time as well. For school, my first example is my English class. I am in creative writing 11, so I often write creatively.  However, I do not just write for the sake of the class. I often like to challenge myself while writing these. Whether these challenges be having a main character completely different then myself, or reflecting on deep topics and problems in my writings. For example, I have quite a few poems written that reflect on problems with society. I also creatively think in another class, which is band. I play electric guitar in the senior Jazz band. I always like to ask for a way to express myself creatively whenever I can. This usually revolves a solo of some kind during a song. I always gladly not only accept to play a solo but create my own that will fit with the rest of the song. As for at home, I also write my own music, completely original. I often challenge myself with writing at home by trying vastly different soundscapes. For example, on song can be very similar to an orchestra, and another I try to write using all kinds of electronic settings and sounds. I also try to push with different emotions as well. I always change my subjects and the emotion I try to convey with each piece. A few examples could be despair, childhood freedom, fear, sadness, acceptance, and more. So for my creative thinking, I write literary pieces, partake in adding to band songs, and writing my own songs.

core competency reflection

This year, I started composing music on digital audio workplaces for myself, and this helps with creative thinking and critical thinking. I compose music that I want to convey a certain emotion as the listener hears it. Therefore, I always start by creatively thinking about what the tones and sounds I want for every type of feeling will be. I need to reflect and have many different ideas about these sounds and atmospheres I want to create. My mind is always running around trying to think of new ideas, and I always think of how I can continue these ambiances I create. I think of different melodies and rhythms I could use; I need to make something original and at the same time grounded enough that it will attract the average listener’s ear. Not only this, writing music also affects and improves my critical thinking.  The reason for this is that I am never satisfied with my work, and I never should be. My music should always increase in experience, and many of the tracks I have already written have gone through very many transitions of changes, to the point that the original compared to the final product are vastly different. I am always reflecting on how I can change the song and improve on it, critically thinking about all the sounds I make. I feel like this has vastly increased both my creative and critical thinking, and I don’t intend to stop.
