In my first semester, one of my classes was socials. We got a bonus assignment at the end of the semester. The bonus assignment was now optional. I choose to do the extra assignment in order to improve my grades. The additional task was to produce a two-paragraph essay explaining why the name of Downey Truck Road should be changed. Our instructor, Ms. Leslie, collated our letters and submitted them to our Coquitlam City Councilors, our MP, Bonita Zarrillo, and our MLA, Rick Glumac, as well as Rachna Singh (the Parliamentary Secretary for Anti-Racism Initiatives). Now they took our letters seriously and made news about them. Furthermore, they are considering changing the name of the road. I am happy of this work since my name, as well as the names of the other 14 students, was included in the news. I also realized that students, not just adults, can affect change in our society. I was extremely happy of this work because it significantly increased my grade. Ms. Leslie even went on the air!
