Information Fluency Paragraph – SAR Dogs

My Paragraph:

Search and Rescue dogs are animals that are used in situations such as track people lost in the wilderness or those lost after a natural disaster, or children and victims of crime. The reason they use dogs rather than other animals is because of their amazing sense of smell that can help them locate people by their scent. The most common breeds of search and rescue dogs are Labrador Retrievers, Bloodhounds, German Shepards and many more. For a dog to become a certified search and rescue dog, they must go through training which usually occurs between the ages of 18 months and two years old, and takes two years to complete. In training, search and rescue dogs must go through learning basic obedience skills, learn how to track, signal their handlers, and behave appropriately in stressful situations. A common practice when training SAR (Search and rescue) dogs is the “runaway” practice where the owner will run from their dog and the dog must find them. There are about 22 SAR dogs that are qualified in Canada according to the Canadian Search Dogs Association. SAR dog owners have to be on call and ready to go 24/7. They have to be ready to go once they get a call. SAR dogs’ dedication and training make them crucial to rescue teams and missions.

Ai paragraph:

Search and rescue dogs, often hailed as heroes in times of crisis, possess an unparalleled combination of instinct, training, and unwavering dedication. These remarkable canines serve on the front lines of disaster response, using their acute senses to locate missing persons amidst rubble, wilderness, or even avalanches. Their keen sense of smell, honed through rigorous training, allows them to detect the faintest scent of human presence, guiding rescuers to those in need with remarkable efficiency. Beyond their invaluable skills, these dogs offer comfort and hope to both victims and responders, their unwavering loyalty and boundless energy embodying the spirit of resilience in the face of adversity. SAR dogs are very helpful, offering hope and comfort to those in need during times of crisis.

Reflection:

My experience using Ai was pretty good. It was interesting to see how quickly that the Ai could write a paragraph on a topic that took me 10 minutes. The paragraph that the Ai wrote was accurate and very formal. Some of the information was very similar to my own. This exercise helped me see how Ai can maybe be useful for finding information about a topic but not for writing a whole paragraph for you as the writing style between the Ai and me are clearly different. The results that I got from the Ai were for the most part expected, I thought the paragraph would be a little longer but other than that all the information was accurate.

Self Assessment

Communication:

In my course of Communications, I did my assignment of Pecha Kucha, which was an excellent example of communication because I demonstrated that I could speak for long periods of time on a subject that I am well versed on, without a script. Our Pecha Kucha projects were projects where we have a week to research a topic that we are passionate about and form a complex question about it. For example, mine was “Should the death penalty be abolished.” You must talk for 20 seconds per slide (without a script), with 15-20 slides depending on your grade. I was proud of how I could research a subject and become so comfortable and versed about it to be able to talk about it for a long period of time with no script or cue cards.

Creative thinking:

In my course of Science, I did a project of “Mitosis Stop-Motion” which was an excellent example of creative thinking because I demonstrated that I could think outside of the box and be creative with my resources. The “Mitosis Stop-Motion” project was a project where we were given resources such as clay, paper, pipe cleaners, and beads and we had to make an animation in the form of a stop-motion of the process of Mitosis. I used clay to form a circle which was my “cell” and pipe cleaners as the “outer shell.” I took many pictures of each frame to create my animation. I was proud of how the video turned out and proud of my hard work. Here is a picture of my “cell.”

Personal awareness and responsibility:

In my course of English, I got an extending which was an excellent example of personal responsibility because I demonstrated my work ethic and my understanding of all the materials in class. One of my favourite assignments that we did that I feel demonstrated my understanding were the “In class writes” we did. This was an assignment we would do after reading a book or watching a movie to prove that you understood. We would get a big paper and must write a mini essay on the topic sentence that we were given by our teacher. My favourite “In class write” was the one that we did about a short story we read in class called “Barney.” It was about a rat who was being experimented on by scientists. I ended up getting an “Extending” on that assignment which made me very proud.

Coast Salish Art Blog Post

I think that my digital knowledge and skills have improved drastically this year. I have really learned so much about how to spot fake news and how to properly fact-check information online. I have also learned how to use incscape and how to use edublog. Before this year, I was very bad with technologie and I didn’t really know anything about edublog. Now I feel pretty fluent with using edublog and I can make posts without any help. I have really enjoyed this course as a whole and I think it is really helpful for students. Now I feel more comfortable with my technologies skills and I now how to convert an SVG file into a JPG.

Break the fake – Purple haze in Kelowna and Okanagan Valley

This article was about how residents in Kelowna and Okanagan Valley woke up one morning to mysterious purple/pink haze.

1. The first thing that I did was I was scrolling through the news and clicked on this article where I saw these two pictures with purple/pink haze.

2. The next thing that I did was I went on Snopes to see if they had any articles on this topic and to see if it was real or not. Unfortunately, there were no articles on this topic. I think that the reason behind that is because it was a relatively new article and wasn’t very popular. The original  article only states two provinces is Canada and I think that maybe not enough people had seen it yet.

3. The next thing i did was a google search with the key words from the original article. I searched up “Purple haze Okanagan” and nothing came up. I then went back to the article and re-read it to find some new key words to use. I searched up “Pink fog Kelowna” and found 4 different articles.

4. The next thing that I did was read the new articles. All of the information was mostly the same stuff. The news outlets also seemed pretty trustworthy. Since all of the information was the same and I didn’t have much to go off of, I went back to the original article again to check the author. I wanted to search him up to see if he had been involved in any prior hoaxes which he hadn’t.

So, after all of this research and no evidence proving that it isn’t real, I believe that this article is a true article.

Take your kids to work day

On take your kids to work day, I went to CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service). I went with my mom and dad because they both work in the same building. During the day, we went through multiple stations and went through all of the different jobs at CSIS. The first station we went to was Internal Security. We learned about how CSIS is a secure environment and talked about all of the different factors that help everybody stay safe. We were not allowed to bring in our phones and that is why I have no pictures from inside but I have pictures from google from the outside of the building. Then, we went to the Physical Surveillance unit, which is my dads unit. He is the chief head of Physical surveillance. In that station, we all got walkie talkies and earphones, we each got a “target” that we had to follow around the mall by my parents work. Next, we went to Special Technical services (STS) where we learned about the different kind of locks and how to pick them. Then, we went to Tactical Internet Collection Officer (TICO) where we learned about how they can find anybody online based on their pictures and their surroundings. Finally, we went to Counter Terrorism and Counter Intelligence where my mom is the Chief Counter Terrorism. There we had a presentation about some of the trips and missions that the people of that unit went on. And then we went home.

1. What did you hear, see, smell, and feel in the work environment on Nov. 1st?

I smelt fresh air when I went to do some surveillance, I saw a woman in a green, floor length jacket that I had to follow around the whole mall, I heard voices in my walkie-talkie reporting back to me on where my target was and what she was doing. I felt super cool walking around the mall with the other parent’s children and making new friends.

2. What about the environment would motivate you to wake up every day to attend work?

Something that would encourage me to go to work every day is how friendly and welcoming the people are.

3. What about the work environment would discourage you from waking up every day to attend work?

Something that would discourage me from going to work every day are the weird hours.

4. What is ONE thing you found interesting about your workplace visit?

I found it interesting how fun it really was to go to work with my parents and really get to know what they do in a day.
