Curling. (2018). Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia1;

Curling, game played on an ice surface in which two opposing teams attempt to score points by sliding handled stones toward a target. The object of the game is similar to that of Lawn Bowls

The ice surface for curling, called a sheet, is generally 138 ft (42 m) long by 14 ft (about 4 m) wide; for some competitions, including the Olympics (see olympic games, it measures 146 ft (45 m) long by 15 ft, 7 1/2 in. (about 5 m) wide. The target, known as a house, near each end of the sheet is 12 ft (3.7 m) in diameter. The center of the house is called a tee or button. The handle-topped, circular granite curling stones may weigh no more than 44 lb (20 kg), generally averaging about 42 lb (19.1 kg).

Games are divided into eight innings, or ends (ten for championship and Olympic competition), with a change of house after each end. The teams, or rinks, are comprised of four players, each equipped with two stones. Taking a position at a foothold at one end of the sheet, each player alternates with an opponent at propelling the stones as close as possible to the tee at the other end. The stones are delivered with a twist of the wrist, giving the characteristic curling action for which the game is named. After all 16 stones have been thrown, one end is completed and the score for that end is counted.

Curling is believed to have been invented in the 16th century by farmers in Scotland, where it was originally played in winter on frozen ponds and lochs. The first curling stones were taken from river bottoms and had very rough finger holds. Stones with handles and brooms to sweep away snow were introduced to the game during the next century.

In 1759 Scottish immigrants brought the game to Canada, where it remains an extremely popular sport. During the French and Indian War, British troops in Québec melted cannonballs into stones and played the game on the frozen St. Charles River. The Royal Montreal Curling Club, established in 1807, was the first club in North America.

The world curling championship has been held since 1959; the WCF endorsed the first women’s championship in 1979. A demonstration sport at the first winter Olympics in 1924, as well as several later competitions, curling was admitted as a medal sport at the 1998 games in Nagano, Japan.

Curling was invented in Scotland. The first rocks they used were rocks from the lakes. In 1759, immigrants from Scotland came to Canada and introduced the sport Curling. Curling is an Olympic team ice sport that has four players in each of the two teams. Each team has one thrower, two sweepers and one person to decide the strategies. The purpose of curling is to throw 42-pound rock closest to the middle of target on the ice. Curling didn’t become an Olympic sport until 1998.

  1. Why are the rocks so heavy?
  1. How much training do athletes need to do to get to the Olympics?

Alex McKeen StarMetro Vancouver. (2018, September 25). This 100-year-old knows how to rock. Toronto Star (Canada).

After watching the 40-pound stone she just threw make its way across the ice surface at the Vancouver Curling Club, 100-year-old Lola Holmes lifts her delivery stick above her head with both arms.

“I love to achieve and I’m very happy with myself today – it was very good,” Holmes said in an interview after the game, her first in the 2018-19 season.

That game was particularly special for Holmes, because it was the first after her 100th birthday. She’s now the oldest curler the provincial sport authority is aware of and one of the oldest of all time in B.C.

Holmes began curling for the second time when she was much younger – only 80 years old.

She had just moved to Vancouver and was actively searching for ways to make new friends. So, remembering how she enjoyed one year of curling when she was 25, she took some lessons.

At the age of 83 her doctor told her she would have to quit the sport because she was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition that limits movement in the wrist.

But she persevered and found a solution in the delivery stick she still uses to this day, which allows her to throw the rock from a standing position using an extendable pole.

“I like it because it’s exercise, there’s a skill to it and friendship,” she said. “Every girl should try and curl.”

100-year-old lady, Lola Holmes is still playing curling to this day. She is Canadian. In the year 2018-2019, it was a special game to Lola because she turned 100. She started curling when she was 25 but she stopped playing after one year. She only resumed at 80. Lola wanted to make new friends. When Lola was 83 years old, the doctor said she couldn’t play sports because she has a wrist problem. But Lola didn’t give up, she found a solution which was to use a delivery stick which she can stand up instead of bending down and turning the stone.

  1. Why didn’t Lola continue playing curling after one year at 25 years old?
Barnsley, P. (2002). Men’s curling team settles for silver. Windspeaker19(11), 3.

As the alternate member of Canada’s Olympic men’s curling team, Ken Tralnberg got his chance to throw a few rocks at the 2002 games in Salt Lake City. When he wasn’t in the lineup, the Dene man originally from northern Saskatchewan was supposed to have the best seat in the house to watch his Kevin Martin rink take on the world and bring home the gold.

In the final against Paal Trulsen’s Norwegian rink on Feb. 22, that’s almost how it unfolded. With the score tied and Kevin Martin holding the hammer in the final end, all the Canadian skip had to do was make his last rock stop a bit closer to the centre of the circles than the closest Norwegian rock.

It looked like a lock. Martin had made shots that were much more challenging all through the Olympic tournament. But the Canadian skip’s last shot, an out-turn draw, was just a touch too heavy and settled an inch off target, leaving the Norwegians with a shocking 6-5 gold medal win. Trulsen later said he was already resigned to the fact that he would be taking home silver as the Canadian skip prepared to make the last shot.

In the 2002 finals of the Olympics in Salt Lake City, the Canadian team lost to the Norwegian team because the Canadian rock was thrown a bit too heavy in the last round.

  1. Who were all the members of both men’s curling teams?
  1. How did Ken get selected to be a spare?

My paragraph

Curling is originated from Scotland. It was played on frozen lakes or ponds. The first stones they used were rocks from the lakes.  In 1759, immigrants from Scotland came to Canada and introduced the sport Curling. It became a popular sport. The first women’s competition was in 1979, curling was a demonstration sport in the Olympics in 1924. Curling only started to give out Olympic medals in 1998. Curling is a sport that requires two teams of four. The goal of curling is to get your teams rock the closest to the target. The target is multiple circles like a dart board on the ice. The center circle is called a button. The reason why we call the sport Curling is because we need to twist our wrist when we throw the rock.

There is a Canadian lady named Lola Holmes. She is 100 years old and she is the oldest curler in the world. She started curling when she was 25Then she stopped curling after one year. At 80 years old, Lola started curling again to make new friends. When she turned 83 years old, the doctor said she couldn’t play sports because she had a wrist problem. But Lola found a solution, she used a delivery stick so she could be in a standing position when throwing a rock. Lola said she likes this sport because she can exercise, and it also develops friendships. I find this really inspiring because it doesn’t matter what age you are, you can still play sports.

In 2002the Canadians and the Norwegians men’s team competed in the Olympics in Salt Lake City. In the finals of the competition, the Canadian team was expected to win the gold medal. Both teams tied so the Canadian team threw the last stone, but it was unfortunately a bit too heavy and the Norwegians won the gold medal. The score was 6 to 5.
