Food Blog #2

For this final food blog I decided to make banana bread. I wanted to make this because we had extra bananas lying around, and it would be convenient to have for breakfast. My mother and I made it together. We used to always bake banana bread orΒ zucchini bread together when I was younger, so it’s sorta like a tradition. I remember bringing them to church on Sundays after we baked them. When the sessions were over, everyone would gather around the food table and eat what was brought (like a potluck). We received many compliments on the dish.

We did not have to make any changes to the recipe. We had all the ingredients required, and the consistency of the batter was correct. The only thing we did was add more flour. This was only because our dry measuring cups said 240ml and 120ml instead of 250ml and 125m. We decided to play it safe and add 3 more teaspoons of flour.

We put the batter in the oven for 55 minutes, however it seemed like it needed a little more time. When we stuck a toothpick in, the sides of the bread came out clean, but the middle was still undercooked. We put it back into the oven for another 10 minutes and it was good to go! The outside of the loaf was firm and brown and the inside was moist and soft. The whole house was filled with the aroma of warm banana bread. My brother gave the bread two thumbs up, and I think my dog did too. Everything went really well and IΒ would definitely make it again.

For this assignment, I decided to make sugar cookies. I prepared this dish because all the ingredients used are household ingredients. (eg. flour, sugar, butter) Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make the frosting since I had already used two sticks of butter. However, the cookies already tasted good enough without it. I like this recipe because the cookies don’t expand. What you cut out is basically what you get. This recipe doesn’t require putting the dough in the refrigerator, so that saves extra time.

The cookies turned out super chewy and soft. Everyone in my household enjoyed them. My mom’s boyfriend said that they gave off a shortbread taste. They also taste really good with a glass of milk. I would definitely make them again. Something I had to change was the amount of flour. I’m thinking either I had to add a little more because of the humidity, or I just didn’t put enough since my cup measure says 240mL. The consistency of the dough also changed as I went along. It started breaking apart more. (Maybe due to air exposure)

Something I learned while baking these is that cookie dough is really adjustable. If it’s too dry, you can add some water. If it’s too wet, you can add more flour until you get the play dough-like consistency. Another thing I learned is to prevent the taste of flour on your second batch of cookies, you can wet your hands before you gather the dough.

For the colour, I used a lot of bright colours since they stood out over the black counter top. The yellow and white complimented each other really well. I took the photo from the top so the camera could capture all the prop items. I like how all the colours work well with each other and the lighting makes the photo look happy.

I tried to make this photo represent baking and how messy it can be. I mainly used colours such as white and silver. The egg and butter give the photo a splash of colour too. The lighting is darker so the other elements can stand out. I like how the photo is taken at a slight angle, and the way it’s edited.

I tried to make this picture represent the many colours in cooking. I used colours such as red, yellow, and orange. The green from the bell pepper stems and the flower bring the whole photo together. This photo was heavily angled and composes of many different textures (ex. the peppers on top of each other). The white chopping board also gives the eyes a break from all the colour. Something I like here is the brightness of the photo.

This last photo represents the flavour in cooking (with all the spices and the lemon). I scattered some spice onto the counter to give a bit of messiness and personality. All the colours are pretty neutral, so the blue checkered dish towel gives the photo a bit of contrast. The photo was taken slightly angled and I lifted the lid on the middle spice for extra texture. I like how everything comes together in a neutral way.

Update: March 11th

My partner and I have been working on our micro bit projects this week. The plan is to use a moisture sensor to detect rain so you don’t forget to bring your umbrella. Today we were looking at the moisture sensor, but we’re not quite sure if it’ll work since it detects the resistance between the two probes. If it does not work we might have to resort to a Plan B. Next, we need to use a buzzer to make a sound to remind you at your front door. Hopefully it works!
